I got a couple of questions about this. Will the V8 springs alone be sufficient enough to handle the V8 or do I need the whole front end? Are the V8 computers the same between the 318s and the 360s? On my engine wiring harness, do I just need to add two injector wires? I thought that the V8s had 4 o2 sensors? Would that not effect it? I was thinking of a TKO Tremec 5-speed conversion for it, is this rational? I do plan on getting on the vehicle, but not racing it everyday. Are the driveshafts the same length between the V6 5-speeds and the V8 5-speeds? Just incase you do not know... my truck is a 1997 Dodge Dakota RC V6 5-speed, 2wd. Thanks.

You need to weigh the cost of buying a truck with a V-8 verse doing what you want to do. To get a V-8 it will cost you 500 to 1000 bucks for a used engine then you are going or wanting to put a high dollar tranny in it. The cutting and fabbing of the motor mounts and all the other things you will have to do. If you decide to rebuild a used engine, I figure you are looking at 10 grand or more for that. You could buy a different truck with a V-8 in it. Heck, for that matter you could probably get you an R\T.
Don't get me wrong people like myself like to say I did this work to my truck. Now that being said. I have a 5.9 that I am having built because I don't have the time but I have the money for it. The bottom end will cost me about 3500 bucks. I got a deal on some built R\T heads for 1200 bucks port and polished. Then I need to have the tranny built that cost is about 2500 bucks. This doesn't include the computer that cost about 300 new injectors 250 or more,400 bucks for a good throttle body or more and the countless other little things that you would need. You will have to have your drive shaft shortened, then you have to ask yourself will the rearend hold up. Goodluck to you in whatever you decide.

You said a couple. I count seven. :-P
Anyway, not the whole front end. The V8 computers aren't the same. Yes, you can just add two injector wires. Upstream and downstream O2 sensors. Single exhaust means two sensors, not four. The Tremec is a good choice. Thge driveshaft lengths are the same, as long as the transmissions are the same length.

$3000 for just the bottom end? They saw you coming. I can get a brand new complete motor for $3000. Fabbing motor-mounts? I am pretty damn sure that the motor-mounts are the same and are even in the same location. The V6s and the V8s are so close together that it is not even funny.

woodrow, im sick of people like you just shooting down the idea whenever someone wants to do a motor swap. the engine mounts are the same, its not that hard. if you're paying 3,000 for a bottom end you're getting raped. Shoe- dont let him get you down, let us know how it turns out.

Thanks. If I had not already started customizing the truck then I would have bought one with a V8, but also on this hand, since I live in a little town I can still tell the Insurance company that it just has a V6. :)

The Magnum V6 and V8 share the same mount points, and the Magnum V8's also retain the LA-style mount ears near the water pump for retro-installations.
