Subject: Buy a 4.7 5spd? IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking at getting a new ride in the near future and have my eyes set on a pretty broad range of vehicles. I currently drive an 87 Acura Legend sedan with the 5speed and 220K miles. I'm looking for something with four doors, utility, speed, and a clutch. I test drove a 2x4 Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7/5speed/3.92/limited slip a couple of times and am sitting on the fence about it. I guess I'm wondering about its daily drive-ability and if I'd miss the lightness of a car. My Legend is old, but quick and invisible. My other choice right now is a Jetta Wagon with the VR6 and 5speed. I have an 87 Mazda PU that my wife would really like to see go - so she's hoping a Dakota fits me well.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Message: dont buy a VW...my brother in law works for
them, unless you opt for the 1.8T stay away!...
the VR6 is a dog, unless its highly modded, in
a wagon, bad idea. the 1.8T, is a great motor,
you can adjust the turbo to about 20# of boost,
with a little tweek ; ) Oh, BTW, my
fiancees2001 VW Golf just got bought back,
was in the shop once a month for the check
engine light....just a little thought.
if you get a 2wd dakota, you should definately
drop it and make it handle, the 4.7 5spd 3.92
LS is the perfect package on a dakota...I wish I
would have gotten the 3.92 gears, I ordered
the Limited slip about a week ago, cause
these trucks have quite a bit of torque.

Message: the way I see it, the only reason you posted on this board is that you want the dakota, but you just need somebody to convince you to buy it. So, go buy the dakota Quad cab, they are beautiful trucks.

Message: Personally I'd go with a 5.2 or 5.9, but that's just my opinion.

Message: My 4.7L, 5-spd, 3.55 LSD 4x2 Quad Cab gets 19MPG on the MTBE gas (automatically lose 2MPG) here in CA in the Sierra foothills. I made 23.5MPG from Coos Bay, OR to Seattle, WA with the tailgate off, on non-MTBE gas.
Plenty of power! I have heard some post that they got the 3.9L V6 and now wish they had gotten the 4.7L, due to lack of gusto. But I don't know if they had a "slush box" or a manual transmission.
I like the 4x2 in the Quad Cab because of the tighter turn radius than the 4x4 gets. I used to have a 4x4 Mazda MPV and it turned like a Greyhound bus in the parking lots. Only used the 4x4 twice in 5 years with it, so decided on LSD rear end with chains to handle the occasional snow.
We like being able to load the whole family of 6, not having the trash in the cabin with us on the dump runs, more room to pack on vacation.
To overcome the short bed, get a bed extender. If not getting a cover, cap, or tonneau, get a Rail N Rack system from www.seaportmachine.com if you want to haul really long stuff.

Message: Dave Mitchell, I don't know about the QCs, but I think the RC and CC 4x4 are like a foot shorter turning radius than the 2x4, I could be wrong, but it's something that sorta stuck out in my mind.
BTW, what is this MTBE gas stuff?
