How long should I go before changing the belt? I have 138,000 and the belt don't look too bad. Should it be changed now just to be safe?

If you had said "The belt looks real good'", I'd say keep it.
But since you said "don't look too bad," I'd replace it.

if you can see cracks on the underside/ribbed side, like where it goes over the waterpump pulley, change it.

Yeah, thats one of those things that you shouldn't even question after 100k. They are very inexpensive, and easy to install. Plus, if it fails, you could overheat. No one wants to overheat an engine for a $20 part.

As mentionned above by 'crow318',
doing preventive maintenance by replacing a 20$ part can save your motor and your life.
A belt snapping (always at the worst possible moment) can lead to a possible overheated engine or much worse, loosing your power steering at highway speeds.
any sign of cracks is asking for trouble,
replace it and keep the old one under the seat as a spare.

Thanks, I thought it probably should be done by now even if it doesn't look bad. I'll get one to do this weekend.
