Subject: ATF+4 available at Wal-Mart
IP: Logged

Message:
ATF+4 is now available at Wal-Mart in their cheap brand for $2 something a quart and the Mopar brand at $5 a quart.

Apparently the patent ran out or Chrysler made a deal with Wal-Mart.

They also now sell Mopar oil filters for $5 something.

Does anybody know if it will hurt if ATF+4 and ATF+3 are mixed?

I saw that ATF4 at Walmart also. I wonder how much money DC made on that deal. It was impossible to get it except at the stealers for $7 a quart. Don't mix ATF3 and ATF4.

So when I go to change my filters and fluid this summer I should continue to use ATF+3? I read the bottle on the ATF+4 and didn't see any such warnings.

I don't flush the converter, so there would still be a fair amount of ATF+3 in the tranny.

Even when the pros do it, there would still be some left over ATF+3 that would mix with the +4.

Yes, I haven't seen anybody else selling the +4 yet, so maybe it was not the patent running out but a special marketing deal.

From what I know, ATF+4 supercedes ATF+3 and I believe they said you COULD mix. But I'd still try to drain as much of the old first.
I think ATF+3 will be discontinued.

It's perfectly OK to mix ATF+3 and ATF+4 under the following circumstance: your transmission originally came with ATF+3. Drain and fill with ATF+4.

However, If your transmission originally came with ATF+4, you must only use ATF+4 fluid.

And never, never let anyone try to convince you that Dexron/Mercon is OK to use in your traqnsmission. It is not.

If you took your truck to Dodge for the fluid service, they would put ATF+4 in.

Thanks for the good advice. Like the poster above mentioned, I didn't see the ATF+3 on the shelf so maybe it will be discontinued.

Mine did come with ATF+3 and the manual (2000) said ATF+3, which I've done a couple or three times already. I'll go with the ATF+4 this time.

It is probably worth the $5 something for the Mopar versus the $2 something for the Wal-Mart SuperTech? Or if done every 25,000 the Supertech may be good enough?

Now I can service the Stratus this summer without going to the dealer to get it. Has anyone dealt with a 2.7L Stratus tranny? Does it have 2 filters also or just one? I know this is not the place to ask, but lots of experts here, someone probably also owns a Stratus.

Can't help you with the 2.7, but I think earlier '00 owner's manuals specifying +3 for the first year of the 4.7 may be in error. I bought my '00 late in the year, and my manual calls for +4; and all other sources seem to call for +4 for the 45RFE.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Actually... Mopar would still only sell it through dealers if they could but outside suppliers took legal action to get them to release the formula to the aftermarket.
