Subject: Burning Oil in 2000 4.7L
IP: Logged

Message:
I am starting to notice smoke coming from tailpipes and I am having to add a quart of oil the last 2 months or so.

2000 Dak with 4.7L V8 with 115600 miles on it, driven somewhat hard.

Am I most looking at replacing Vavle seals or something more detailed like rings?

If valve seals, what kinda price range should I be looking at? I will more than likely have Marty at KRC do it if he has the time when I am ready.

Do a cylinder leakdown test.
That can tell you a bit about the condition of valve seats and rings, depending on where you hear the air escaping from - intake/exhaust is valve seat, oil fill port is valve seals or rings.
Oil spots on ground is a different type of leak.

valve seals are bad when it smokes on startup if it smokes when its running its prolly bad rings. Good luck, you may be looking at engine tear down.

Mikey... you can burn off oil without seeing any smoke coming out the tailpipe.... common cause of that could be oil getting sucked in due to vacuum from a PCV valve or breather element leading up to the intake.... those areas can allow just enough to get sucked in but not cause the blueish smoke you would normally see like from valve seals or ring...

I've heard to do a compresson test. Put a tiny amount of oil in the cylinder and do again. If compression goes up it's probably the rings, if the same then top end.

Its most likely a leaky intake manifold. I had the same problem on my 99 5.2. Look inside your intake manifold with flashlight. If you see oil then you found the problem.

There is a thin steel plate on the underside of the intake manifold. After time the gasket will deteriorate and get sucked out. That leaves a big hole between your push rod valley and intake. You will need to remove the intake manifold and replace the gasket. As long as you are at it get a replacement plate from Summit Racing. It replaces the thin steel plate with a quarter inch aluminum plate. Also, as long as you are that far you just as well pull your heads and get them cleaned, checked and resurfaced. A new timing chain would be good too. I spent several hours scraping carbon deposits from the top of my pistons to try and reduce pinging.

Watch for a loss in oil pressure. When I did my truck I found the oil pump screen was about 99% blocked with bits of intake gasket and carbon from burning so much oil.

Izzy - how did you make out ? The latest post by Mark Shimonek can be disregarded. Your 4.7 is a completely different design from his 5.2 and will definitely not have that problem.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Yup. There is no OIL or WATER anywhere near the (plastic) intake on a 4.7 Magnum!!!

And if you ever need to find the oil pump. It's NOT in the oil pan either! It's on the crank snout behind the timeing chain cover :P

Hopefully it's something simply like a breather somehow sucking it in from the crank case breather.
Your air filter is not like REALLY REALLY dirty is it? If there was a huge restriction across the air filter, maybe it would really suck air right out of the breather hose which goes from the intake tubing to the crank case.

If it's not that simple either for some reason some valve guides, which would smoke more on start up and any time you start from a dead stop and clear up once on the throttle... or worn rings. Which would smoke more once on the throttle.

I'm having the same problem with my 2001 Dakota 4.7L with 140,000 miles. I've changed the oil in this truck religously for 10 yrs. No oil staining on driveway, on bottom of engine, and no blue smoke detected at start up or when running. There is some oil residue looking down the throttle body. I'm going to change the PCV, and monitor. I'm loosing about 1qt every 3K miles.

Im thinking of buying a 2002 dakota. Its got over
200+ thousand miles and the owner says he has to
put oil in it at times. Slight white smoke at start up
but seems to run great. He is asking 3,000 for it.
Should i close the deal or walk?
