There are numerous brands of shorty headers out there for the 4.7. I am considering getting some but was wondering if any certain brand seemed to be any better than the rest. I've heard that the ceramic coating is the best way to go. Can y'all share your experiences with new headers and any tips to keep in mind? Thanx for the help.

I purchesed the Gibson Shortys did not get the ceramic I will prob regret it.There are a few brands out there dont know if any is better then others. They all pretty much look like the same.I did run across a set that looked some what diffrent but they were not recommended for Highway use.If you dont get ceramic dont make the same mistake as I did and put header wrap on them.It helps keep heat in giving a slight or no gain but it also keeps moister in wich leads so faster erosion. And plan on changeing your Y pipes also to get the gain from your exhaust work.I also learned that the hard way.

My 02 2wd 4.7 has the Gibson headers on it. You will see no improvement at all over stock if you don't change the y-pipe also. I did notice a nice pickup in topend power when I installed the true dual exhaust setup I have on the truck now. The exhaust manifolds aren't the "cork" in the 4.7s exhaust the y-pipe is, I would change that first if I was to do it over again.

If you still buy the headers though definately get the ceramic coated ones the regular chrome ones that I have rusted around the collectors after about 2 yrs, and in about 1 or 2 more yrs I will be installing another set to replace the completely rusted through set.

The factory 4.7 exhaust manifolds were designed to flow within 2% of headers, so the cost vs. performance is steep. After the OEM y-pipe was cut off my '01 4.7 RC (replaced by Magnaflow Y), I could see the 1 1/2" (each pipe) inside diameter at the "Y" intersection.

By changing the Y pipe, and going with true duals, people have dynoed a gain.

That'll be my next step.

NOT the headers.

Anyone seen a dyno, same 4.7 engine, smae ambient conditions, before and after header change?

If I was spending that much on the headers, I'd want to see tyhe results.

Most mods on the 4.7, are pretty dissappointing on the dyno.

Free things like removing the belt driven clutch and fan, show a gain. (mines been off for about 4 1/2 years.

$30 dollaRS paying to professionally remove my third cat, show a gain.

There is a warning on most of the header manufaturers websites that will happen on a lowered Dokota.I know for sure gibson gave that warning.Happened to another Guy with Gibsons on a lowered Dokota and I think I read he put Durango 4.7 headers on his Dak and it worked.Gibsons Recomendation for the problem. Dont know what size Motor you have just saying. But they would not give him back his money becuase of the warning in fine print. They replaced them free of charge with the Durango Headers.

Yup. How many your '00 has will depend on which emissions package your truck came with.

_Gear_, Magnaflow has the y-pipes on their website under accessories. They come is different entrance/exit diameters. The custom muffler shop that does my work in Oak Ridge, Tn. had them in stock; about $35 as I recall. My '01 4.7 exhaust has: 2 1/2" from manifolds (after pre-cats)/ Magnaflow 2 1/2" dual-into-3" Y-pipe/ Carsound (Magnaflow) 3" hiflow catalytic converter/ Flowmaster 70 3" entrance-2 1/2" dual exit/ 2 1/4" duals exiting ala R/T angle with 3" stainless tips. I must mention that a have a 15x6 OEM '92 Dak Sport wheel and tire for a spare (11 pounds lighter/ space for left pipe.

01Motorsport,

I find it interesting that you say the Dakotas manifolds flow within 2% of header spec. where did you find this info? I have been in the market for awhile looking for decent headers for my 01 Dak QC obviously under the impression same as any old school power pack boys are. when you build an engine make it breath.. but from what im gathering from you guys is that the headers on this 4.7 isnt a nececity. very nice to hear as the JBA's are nearly 750$ my cost here in canada. So my major quesntion is where can and spec info for the 4.7 be found as far as 01Motorsports comment of the factory manifolds are within 2% of a headers flow.

Manicmechanic, you got me to thinking about that info of the 2% of headers. The info was on the allpar site from when the "next generation" 4.7 V8 came out in 1999. A D-C exhaust engineer made that claim. However, I have made a lengthy search of the web to find it again, without any luck. The article seems to have been superceded by one from Mopar Action. Several of us on dd.com commented on seeing the same article. Maybe allpar can be persuaded to insert the quote again in their 4.7 info. Nevertheless, if you have a mild engine, the manifolds are fine. More radical, more power, go for headers, IMHO.

Yes they should would work better together than either one on its own but if I had to guess it would only be a few hp difference.

so if you have a stock Y pipe there is no
need for shorty headers because you won't
get any performance ?
