Hey everyone... I just bought a 01 5.9 R/T w/ exhaust, air raid intake, and a spacer above the intake manifold.. The vehicle has 87,000 miles. For some reason about 15min. after driving it acts like its running rich. When more gas is applied however it does not lean out so I thought it was old plugs fowling out so I repaced them.. The problem still exists. However if I pull over and turn the truck off, and restart the problem goes away... So im thinking its electrical?? Im a ford guy and new to this game so I would appreciate any help!! Thanks in advance

Any codes ? (key on off on off on will set any stored codes in your odometer display, ending with "pdone") Not sure exactly what you mean by "acts like it's runnung rich", might be helpful if you describe the actual symptoms.

The codes are generic codes (they mean the same for all car manufacturers).

P0300 Random Multiple Cylinder Missfire
P0305 Cylinder 5 Missfire
P0307 Cylinder 7 Missfire

Have you checked your distributor cap and rotor by any chance?

Thanks guys, thats a big relief of my shoulders. Those codes make sense by the way the truck drives when its acting up. I will start by looking at the distributor cap and button and coil. Is the coil located inside the distrubitor like my mustang by any chance?? And pacman thanks, I will deff. stay in touch...

no, the coil isn't located in the distributor. on the distributor you'll have your 8 plug wires and a 9th wire that runs to your coil. on the 5.2 it's on the right front of the block, not sure about the 5.9

Bad cap/rotor would be noticed at idle even when you first started it. Misfires can be caused by many things since they are variations in crankshaft rotation, not ignition misfires as most think.

With that many miles, check the intake plenum for leakage as well (oil in the bottom of the plenum).

Also, pull the plugs on that bank and "read them". Look at the electrode and down past the ceramic for carbon buildup or any other buildup on them. Color also is something to look for. The heads on the 3.9/5.2/5.9L are notorious for cracking in between the valve seats - causing problems like this as well.

When you cycle the key, you're basically resetting the misfire counters so it takes a while for the PCM to catch the problem.

Fuel pressure is also something to look for - what's the pressure at idle, when the problem happens, and up to 10 minutes after you turn off the engine?

Well I dont have access to the proper tools to check fuel pressure or remove my intake manifold.. atleast not right now. The truck is under warranty so Im thinking about taking it in.. but I wanted to get info from here also. I did however replace all of the plugs w/ champion's and the plugs were gapped correctly and looked fine...

Normally, yes...but if they're reacting slow but still within PCM limits, no.
