Depends on the truck and what equipment it has. But, generally speaking, you won't be able to tow much more than 6K#.

As for length, there's no equipment limit. You truck can tow a 5K# 20' trailer as well as a 5K# 40'. All other things being equal. But longer trailer are more subkect to cross winds, sway, etc. But controlling that is not so much a function of the truck, but the hitch.

Within reason of course. If you try and tow an empty 60' trailer down I-25 when the wind is blowing, you're going to have trouble.

i got a 02 Durango with 4.7 and 3.55 gears and i've towed a 73 Nova on a steel deck trailer from Allentown PA back to Baltimore MD coming back thru the mountain hills of RT 222, RT 30, I-83 coming back into the MD area and it did well... so i was close to the 6K pound mark give or take a few pounds cause it was a friends construction trailer for towing 2 bobcats but that seems to be a safe limit...

I have a 03 Dakota 4.7 QC that i use for a landscaping business. I
tow a 18 ft trailer almost every day. the 4.7 has all the power i
could want, and w/ electric trailer brakes i can stop, the only
problem i ever have is with the rear suspencion. I tow cars for a
friend, which puts me up to about 6600 lb behinde me and that's
about all i'd care to tow. not because i can;t stop it, or because it
dosen;t have the power, just because it dosen't feel good going
over bumps and bad roads.

as long as your carefull the truck will be fine. my 03 just turned to
100,000 mi, towing it's own weight for about 1/3 of it's life.

I am towing past the limit near 8k
Having good air bags, sway control, and electric brakes really help. And the 4.56 gears.
I never tried to tow the trailer with the 3.55's

I've pulled about 5500 with the 3.55 gears with my truck with no problem; that include very hilly terrain. What boB says about there being no length limit is not entirely accurate though, there can be limits to length. I recall issuing special permits for overlength trailers towing racing sculls when I worked on the turnpike. Be a good idea to check with athorities if plannig to tow something extremely long.

well having 4.56 gears can up the weight limit abit to what it can pull.... but i would have to say if your pulling over 7000 lbs a trailer brake is a must.... actually most trailer places that sell trailers say not to pull a weight greater then the vehicles weight.... but i would have to say if your trailer has brakes then few hundred pounds over cant hurt i guess....

i usta tow a 30' travel trailer. not one of the new feather-lite ones, a old honking heavy ass son of a b!tch. i would have to say it weighed in at least 6500lbs. i did it with no equilizer hitch, bags, or anything like that.
The worst part about it was that i didnt have the right hitch for it. if i did, my headlights wouldnt have pointed toward the sky. the front end came off the ground one time on a speed bump too. Again, all wouldnt have happened if i had an equilizer hitch.
I towed that thing everywhere. Long hauls, short hauls. After I sold it, I found out that you cant tow anything over 26 feet with anything less than a 3/4 ton pickup. I dont know how i didnt get nabbed, but I guess the ticket would have been really bad. They have that law, so people dont try to tow these things with geo metros. Seen that done though!
My 93 cc v8 Auto 4x4 w/3.55's did the job fine, power wise and even stopping wise. When i first got it i didnt have the right plug for it so i didnt have the electric trailer brakes working and I still stopped fine. Let me tell you though, going down the highway with that thing was VERY scary....
