Subject: 4.7 code p1391

Hi everybody! I'm new to the forum, and I'm having a similar problem. I would appreciate any input.
I had the engine rebuilt on my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 It cranks, but will not start and gets a p1391 code. The cam and crank sensors checked good, but replaced them anyway. The timing marks on the crank and cam gears line up properly(Could've been the rebuild)The manual says there should be battery voltage to the connectors at each coil. (I get it for a second, then drops to zero)I've been dealing with this for some time now and it's getting frustrating.
1)When I pulled the engine, there were some connectors to the trans still installed. Gave it a few hard yanks before I realized it was the harness. Would any trans sensors keep it from starting? I'd hate to replace that entire harness unnecessarily
2)I bled off the A/C to pull the compressor. The schematic shows a low A/C pressure switch sends a signal to the PCM. Would that keep it from starting?
3)The ground wire to the PCM (black coated)I connected it to one of the engine hoist studs. Is that the proper ground? Would that keep it from starting?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve

Is the engine grounded to the body ? Might have something to do with that PCM ground. Did you look up what the code means ? The solution for a problem like this for one person will not always be the solution for everyone.

Alan, what you wrote probably made sense to you but, most of us are wondering what (or is that wut?) the real solution was. I don't think all the wires in the PDC suddenly went bad.

P1391 (M)

Intermittent Loss of CMP or CKP

Loss of the Cam Position Sensor or Crank Position sensor has occurred.

staibi, was there a shim on the cam position sensor that you might have left off during the rebuild? Is the tone wheel on the right cam (passenger's side) damaged?

well taht might be true about tha cam position sensor and the crankshaft ps but i changed both of those as well and it didnt make a difference at all im not sayin that thats ur solution to tha problem but i had that same code pull up on mine and no one could tell me exactly wut it wus some1 told me it wwus misfire and someotha bs but ive known a few other people with the same engine with the same problem and wut i said fixed the problem so u can try it or not but im jus lettin yall no what hapopened to me and that could bve a possible solution

now the code reall means...

P1391 low voltage to the pcm or asd relay

which is the autoshutdown relay if you have not already changed that then you should if thats not it u wanna chek out the wires going from ur relay box but if yall have ne more questions let me know

Old post, but it can help others, 5 weeks fighting
with similar problem, several shops visit and no
solution, simple replace of an aftermarket CPS by a
Mopar CPS solves this immediatly.
