Message:
I have read just about all of the posts in this forum so far. So please dont beat me up too bad over this question.
I like the sound of the current exhaust and as I understand it, it isn't really a bad exhaust system. Is the gain in HP/TQ really worth the 400 or 500 bucks? I would rather spend my money getting the intake, headers, TB and other parts replaced since I know they pretty much suck. if i dont replace the current exhaust right away, will it be a bottleneck compared to the other mods?
TIA

You have to tell us what kind of exhaust you are planning on replacing it with. You seemed to have left that out.

I am looking at the Gibson. from what i gather it is not real loud at idle, but deep and throaty. I dont really want anything way loud even at full throttle. like i said, i like the sound of the factory exhaust, just wish it was a little more ballsy.
i have been reading another recent post on pretty much the same topic, so i will keep an eye on replies there also.

I'm thinking the same as douglas...
I thought I read on one of the posts that the factory exhaust ('01 R/T's) was made by gibson?
Help?

I think most people underestimate the factory cat back. I think there are gains to be had in the hearder, y-pipe, and cat but not so much in the muffler and 3" tailpipe. Most people replace the exhaust for the sound and not performance. I haven't ever heard of anybody just changing the cat back and getting any measurable gains on a R/T, sure if they change headers or cats but not just muffler and tailpipe. If you have a track go get some times and then just remove the entire exhaust system from the cat back, if no cat back doesn't increase times then the most expensive cat back system won't either. Once you get to a point with a lot of mods then their would be gains in the muffler, but I'd say get all that other stuff first.

The factory exhaust is fine, you will not notice much improvement with a cat back until you increase your intake and perhaps get headers.

Get the cold air intake and maybe a throttle body first. And save up your money for headers/catback.
