Which ratio do you that have other than stock gears prefer 4.10 or 4.56? Using stock 4X4 rims and tires, tow a 4-5000 boat, and do alot of high 70-80 mph travel.
Do not want to lose too much highway mpg :)

I think most chose what they did being well aware of how it would affect there trucks - and are therefore pleased with whichever choice they made.

For your needs - stock tires, lots of 70-80mph travel, want to keep highway gas milage - I'd think you'd be happiest with 4.10 like I went with. You'll be able to tow 5000 quite well.

Thanks,
What are your rpms at 70 with the 4.10's???

It tows not too badly now with the 3.55's, though the mountains of WV do lug it quite a bit.

Mind you with a tow weight of 5000#, I am over the gvwr of the truck already :(
It is a Quad 5.9 and weighs 5200 with just me in it, so through in luggage, another person and well let's just say if it isn't well over 10k I would be surprised!

It is a little hard on the trans with the 3.55's though, esp. towing that much from PA to FL.

3.92 gears wouldn't be bad IF they are found cheap enough.
The 4.56 special of $149 is very tempting and according to the calc. the rpms at 70 should be right around 2500 rpms.

Now the question is could I tow in OD then, because the rpms with OD off would be way too high.

I know you aren't supposed to tow in OD, but hey what fun is that!

I dont think you will like the 4.56s and towing. I have the 4.7L 4.56 gears and 33s. The truck screams when it shifts out of OD above 70mph. 3200-3700 RPMs My boat weighs about 2k lbs. It is ok in OD on flat ground or with OD off at 60-65mph. Just my 2cents. CC

Thanks, but kicking out of OD isn't an issue with the 5.9. I have a throttle stop on the cruise cable that prevents it. :)
Only lose a couple of mph now except on the biggest of hills, but I know it is hard on the trans and let's face it - the 5.9 trans isn't its strong point!

My dad has an 02 Quad cab 4X4 with the 4.7 and while it is a nice engine, I just can't stand the weak power band with the 3.55's in his truck. The slightest hill and it downshifts (while empty), but on the other hand he gets about 20 mpg on the highway compared to my 18.5 or so.

Right now it screams with the OD off and doing 70, that is my biggest hesistation on deeper gears. But I think I wouldn't need to take the OD off with 4.10's let alone the 4.56's - at worse case might have to shut the lockup off.

i have a regular cab r/t so i dont tow anything but i run 4.56s and my tires are only 28" diameter and i love it. turns 2500rpms at 66mph which isnt bad at all. with 31" or 33" tires u would only be at around 2100-2200rpms so if i were u id get the 4.56s cause u have a pretty heavy truck and would benefit a lot from it.

31" tires and 4.10's will give you about 2200 rpm's at 70 mph. If you were to downshift into 3rd, you would be at about 3200 rpm's. That is certainly not bad for that engine at all. At 80mph, you will be at 2500 and 3600 rpm's respectively.

with 4.56's and 31" tires you will be around 2400 at 70 and in 3rd, you will be at 3500 rpm's (assuming you have it locked up). Also, not bad rpm's for that engine. At 80 mph, you would be at 2800 and 4000.

And, as you stated, with either of these gears compared to the 3.55's, you will have less need for the downshift.

Sounds like to me, if you like towing at 80, you would be best off with the 4.10's or 3.92's if you can find them cheap. I looked into just getting a set of axles from the junkyard. I found a set, front and rear for $700. That is a good deal since you can probably get the same price if you can sell your set to someone who wants 3.55's

Hmmmm I usually don't tow over 70-75 mph.
2800 at 80 mph, but then again realistically how often is that going to occur......... I live in PA so not too often here anyways :(

Going to 4.56 should give me a 22% torque increase which is quite a bit.

Wonder if the JBA shorty headers and a modified intake would keep the highway mpg close to where it is now???

Nope, you might as well forget about gas milage with 4.56 gears and a 5.9. You'll see a big gain in torque going from 3.55 to 4.10.

i have question about swapping rear end gears also and i am not completely decided on which i should use. i have a 2004 dakota extended cab with the 4.7 and the 45rfe trans. it came stock with the 3.55 gears and recently i added 20' wheels and tires. should i go with 4.10 or the 4.56? i have a custom cai and gibson headers with a flowmaster cat back soon to be converted to true duals. any suggestions?

20" wheels means nothing when deciding on gears. The overall tire diameter is what is important.

Kowalski keeps mentioning 4.10's, and I would say for good reason. The 4.56's are only for very large tires, possibly for drag racing, and if you spend all day every day hooked to a trailer (like a lawn care service).

A few guys with the R/T's like them for the racing aspect.

I have the 3.55's with 31" tires. I will be looking at swapping a stock set of axles with 3.92's. If I can't find a set for a decent price, I will buy 4.10's.

with the 5.9 I would say 4.10's being that it makes the most low end power while also having a rediculously low rev limit (blame DC). With the 4.7 don't fear the 4.56 gears. At 75 its at about 2500 rpms but nothing for that motor and pulling hills out of OD at 4k passing slower traffic is also nothing for revs on the 4.7 so I say 4.10 for the 5.9 and 4.56 for the 4.7 all the way stock tires and all.

Thanks. Figured it was easier to ask those that have them what they like about them.

Leaving tomorrow for vaca in FL (towing the boat), wish the gears were in it now!

Mileage towing right now sort of - well - sucks.

Hmmm. actually I wasn't being sarcastic. I wouldn't want to turn 3k+ for extended times, especially while towing. But, on occasion, I hit 5-6k between shifts. Fun as hell! BTW it's not my daily driver, only 30k in 5.5 years
