Subject: My new 97 5.2 4x4 with a few questions

Well, I'm totally new here and just want to say that you have an impressive site here. I just bought a 1997 5.2 Dakota 4x4 Club Cab 5-spd manual and have a few questions. I'm super excited about getting the truck and can't wait to begin driving it regularly. I took it for a test drive and just about everything is perfect at 109,000 miles. The clutch is tight and stiff, but it does squeak pretty well when ingaging and disingaging. What do you suggest to lube it with and what do you think it could be coming from? I'll have a better chance to look at it wed when I get it here so I'll give you a little more info on it then.

Also, the previous owner has put Premium in it all it's life and I was wondering if it would hurt anything to go back to regular unleaded? The owner also puts synthetic Mobil 1 in it every 5000 miles and I would like to know what weight you suggest with the miles the truck has?

Thanks in advance for any questions answered. Oh, and the truck came with a white shell that I want to sell. The shell is in great condition and also I am selling a brand new carpet kit that came with the truck. It's located in SoCal. Thanks again!

Stick with the mobil 1 syn. You may want to go with the newer mobil 1 EP syn . Cost a bit more but better if your going with longer drains. Just be sure you use a good filter like WIX . NAPA GOLD filters are wix. Some other parts houses also carry WIX with there brand name on them . Just ask who makes there filters.
The previous owner most likely used premium gas because it had spark knock. One of the big problems to cause this is a bad gasket on the plenium. Using oil is another sign this gasket is bad.

The cluch is another story. One of 2 things wrong. Throw-out bearing is bad or cluch/presure plate is worn out. Eather way, change it all, cluch plate, presure plate and throw-out bearing. It's time for all 3. If the pedal pushes in real hard that's also a bad sign. Enjoy your truck

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll keep running premium until I get a chance to check it out further. I also was expecting a little more punch out of the 5.2 with a stick. Could that gasket that you mentioned affect compression? I got a killer deal on the truck and was expecting to have to put a little money into it. Just how much do you think the clutch plate, presure plate, and throw-out bearing will run? The clutch isn't super stiff, but it fells like it's a good stiff.

I forgot to mention the ABS sensor light is on. I have a 97 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with the same problem. The owner of the truck said he took it in twice and they couldn't figure out what it was. They thought they fixed whatever it was, but the light just came back on the next week. I'm not super concerned about it, but would like to know what it possibly could be. Thanks again!

This is just a bump, but I was asking... Could the plenium gasket affect compression? How much would a clutch plate, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing run? Should I be worried about my ABS sensor light being on? Thanks again!

Plenum gasket will have more effect on engine vacuum than compression. See if you can see oil looking down the TB.
As for the ABS light, look to see if there is a speed sensor on top of your rear differential. When this goes bad, it is one thing that would trip the ABS light. The speed sensor is in the rear at least '99 and up, not sure when it started though - maybe on your '97 ?
I'd stick with the synthetic, 10w40 unless you have low compression.
Enjoy your new to you truck !
