I gotta `00 4.7 qc with about 80k miles on it. The issue I `m having at the moment with it is from a dead stop to say 45ish mph the fan sounds like it is outrunning the motor and then it settles down or at least quietens down. My parents have an `03 like mine and they don`t have this issue. The clutch feels stiff when I try to turn it by hand. Enlighten me someone. Thanks.

Your cluch fan is defective. Personally, I would remove the fan and cluch and go with a good elictric. In fact, I beleive your 00 has electric on it already and should do the job. If not, buy a good quality high output electric fan system..Bonus. you gain HP and a touch better ga milage.I can not attest to the Dakota but was reading an artical that stated incressed HP can vary to as high as 27 HP. That's a bunch.

So many problems . So little time

That`s what I thought. It does have electric ones on it too. Just outta curiousity, why does it have all these fans? I thought maybe the electric ones were for running the a/c or are they temp controlled also? I`ll check into an electric kit. Thanks.

from the Dodge FSM, the electric fan comes on with demand for a/c and engine temp above 130 or engine temp @ 210.

i have an '00 QC w/3.9 and have been running with just the electric for about 2 yrs now and no overheat issues at all. not even close even idling on traffic.

Okay, exactly how does the fan clutch remove? I seen the 4 bolts that hold the fan in place but what about the clutch? Is it the big nut in the center of the pulley? I don`t wanna get out there and get it where I can`t go anywhere `cause I gotta go to work in a little bit. Thanks.

use a impact hammer and a blunt bit and just zip it off. that nut threads onto the waterpump shaft.

Well, I don`t have an "impact hammer". All I have is a 20 oz framer. By " zip it off " I`m assuming to " knock it off ". Well do I have to pull the front of the truck apart to do this cause I ain`t getting anywhere with what I`m doing.

DO you know what a impact hammer is? if you dont, it is a gun that hooks up to a air compressor and has a bit that goes in the middle. what you do is place that bit on the big nut that is bolted to the water pump. put it on the left side of a flat spot on the big nut and squeeze the trigger and it will spin the nut off.

OH...well in that case, no I don`t know what an impact hammer is. I got an impact wrench but I`m sure it ain`t the same. But I`m losing ya when say to put the bit on the left side of a flat spot and it`ll spin the nut off? Now does this nut come off clutch so I can put it back on the w/pump? And too what bit are we talking about using here? Sorry for sounding ignorent here but I`ve never used this stuff before. Just never had too. Thanks for your help.

get a wrench to fit that large nut. then grab the pulley from the side with some vise-grip pliers. be careful not to bend the pulley up.

now, take your 20oz framing hammer and give it a couple of good whacks and it should come right off.

No matter which direction your engine turns, no matter which direction the fan rotates when the engine is running, you can always get that big nut off if you remember this: To loosen that big nut, turn it in the same direction as the fan would normally rotate.

Thanks guys!! The fan is off and it runs cool (so far). Wasn`t hard. Held the pulley with vice grips and took Josh at his word and broke it loose with my version of an impact hammer. The Armstrong Hammer. Yep, Channel locks. Thanks again guys!!

I removed both clutch fan and electric fan after replacing both as well as two relays for the electric fan. I replaced them with a Flex-a-lite 295 dual elctric fan made for full size pick-ups. This took 2+ weeks to modify. Now when towing my engine stays cooler and I have more power. In the winter my engine warms up faster and as a result I get 2-4 mpg better. It's like getting an older engine off choke faster. No more roaring when starting up on cold mornings.

I have a 2000 CC 4x4 with a 4.7 liter V-8.

bob@flex-a-lite.com in customer service has pics of it that u may be able to have him e-mail them to you.

Now with the fan clutch off do you actually need a fan?

I have been wanting to remove mine for some time, but i am afraid that it would over heat? I live in the mojave dessert of cali and it gets freaking hot here.

Would it matter with no fan and a 180 stat?

thanks

Welp, don`t know much about the temps in the mojave but my guess is it gets perty warm. You could probably get an electric fan to replace the stock electric that may flow more cfm`s of air and be fine. I live in Florida and have noticed no change in engine temp at all. I know Fla. ain`t no mojave but hey we get warm too! I just wished I`d taken the clutch fan off earlier. But anyway, if things get too hot just put it (clutch fan) back on.

Well, my fuel mileage has increased somewhat. I was getting anywhere from 16.5 - 17.2 mpg, and that`s with a cold-air filter. After pulling the fan off, I ran a tank and got 19.5 mpg. I`m sure it`ll vary some but it ain`t never varied that much. I`m not suggesting everyone go and pull off their fans I just wanted to let this board know how my truck reacted after the fact. Your mileage may vary.
