I've got a 1999 5.2L w/ automatic. It usually runs fine, but very rarely (about 2-3 times a month) it will quit when I take my foot off of the gas. It can happen at pretty much any speed, but it only happens prior to the engine being fully warmed up (usually the first ten minutes or so). When it happens, it won't restart unless I keep my foot on the gas when turning it over, then keep it reved in neutral at about 1K-2K rpms until it warms up - then it runs fine. If I take my foot off prior to then, it immediately quits. Other than this intermittent problem, it runs fine. I've had suggestions that it may be the vehicle speed sensor, crank sensor, air temp sensor, coolant temp sensor, and throttle position sensor. But the engine light doesn't come on so there are no codes, and I can't afford to start replacing them all. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all fine. Anyone have any ideas? thx

Here's one to add even more complexity - could have something to do with the IAC (idle air control) too - might just need cleaning. You'd need to remove the TB to clean it, being caredul not to twist the plunger. From your description though, the first thing I'd check would be battery voltage after the vehicles been sitting (your cold start situation. Our PCM's are voltage sensitive - one of the first signs we get of a marginal battery is often the PCM forgetting the idle setting. The starting procedure you are describing is how it relearns the idle; and we often have to go through that when changing to a new battery too (since voltage is disrupted). Once you run the truck, the charging system puts enough current back into the battery that the truck might run fine until it sits overnight again. Do you have a volt meter, or a friend with a good battery who might trade to test ?

One person I gave this info too decided to drive his truck to a shop to have the battery tested; and then reported the voltage tested good - I hope everyone understands why that method of testing is unreliable for this problem - you have to test the battery after its been sitting whithout the engine charging it first.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

What he said. Start with the IAC valve. Same thing happened to my 99 5.2 so I replaced the IAC and all is well. Get an OHM meter and check it out the Haynes book gives you the how to's on checking this, Good luck.
