I have a 2000 Quad cab 4.7 4x4. Has anyone else had problems with the lifters. I had #1 and #8 blow the rocker off the valve. On #8 It bent a valve so off comes the head to fix that. I am going to replace all of the lifters since I have it ripped apart. Is this rare or a common thing to have the lifters do that? I have 160,000 km's on the engine. Yes I'm from Canada....

Since the 4.7 is an overhead cam design, what Manny says is technically true; but they do have a comparable part in the valve train - so we know what you are talking about. I haven't heard of this being a common problem - might want to check the timing chains and tensioner and valve springs while it's apart.

Manny - the 4.7 doesn't have rockers either - you missed that one...

No one believes you because what you say isn't true - very little changes between those years.

Over reving if your rev limiter is defective and my pick, Heavy carbin buildup allowing the valve to strick a piston. But you would know this if you had the head off. Defective valve springs. Is probably the best answer. Change them for sure

So many problems ,,,, So little time

Yup - no amount of machining is going to fix a weak valve spring...

did you check you lash adjusters? seen many of these collapse and throw rockers. could be from lack of oil/plugged passages/weak springs inside them. not uncommon with high mileage

So,getting the heads back today. Here is the problem. The 4.7 and Ford's 5.3 Triton have aluminum heads with steel valve seats. My 4.7 got a little hot, aluminum and steel expand and contract at a different rate. When the aluminum heads got hot and expanded, the steel valve seat dropped loose on #8 cylinder. When the valve came up to close, crunch.
So getting 2 new valve seats in #8, the rest they are doing some work, (stamping) is what he called it. This will fix the problem if the engine gets to hot, it will prevent the seats from falling out. Also repalcing all of the lifters.
He said it is common in the 4.7. Don't know if Dodge has fixed the problem with the newer 4.7
Should have this thing back together this weekend. Ordered a 3in lift and Trexus 33 inch mudders........sweet.

Re: Parts manager

Yes, you are also correct with the lifters.Spring inside of the lifters get weak and they will not compress and then blow your rocker off. Hence, all new lifters.

And Bionicredneck,

you are all so correct. Talked to Dodge parts dude, 99-01 will interchange, 02 is by itself as well 03-04.
Another parts dude from dodge said 99-00, while 01 is by itself.
My wife has a 2000 Jeep Grand Chk LTD with the 4.7, won't interchange either. Only Dakota and Durango. Wierd.
