new to truck maintance, what is the best oil weight to run during summer months? and is 5/30 going to hurt the engine, or need to change this week before it gets any warmer this week? thanks

5W-30 and 10W-30 have the same oil viscosity at engine operating temperature. 5W-30 is better for your engine than 10W-30 on cold starts (40*C or below) because the oil is a bit thinner and is more easily pumped when cold. Here in the Pacific Northest, I run Mobil-1 0W-30 year round, because it's easy to pump when cold, and just the right viscosity when the engine is at operating temp (about 100*C).

Look at the charts for different oils at

You want the 40C number as low for good cold start oil flow, but your 100C number should be around 10, which is what the average engine is designed for.

The lower the low number, the easier to crank when seriously cold. Also less fuel used idling.
You won't want to exceed the upper number. Higher viscosity does not translate to more protection, but it can mean less lubrication in some areas.
Dodges run at comparitively low oil pressure. Your electric gauge may be 10 to 20 lbs high. Thicker oil will just have a harder time getting where it is needed.
I've run the same 3.9 525,000 miles using Amsoil Series 2000, 0W-30 oil. Seems to be pretty good stuff.
