Subject: Oil Change Frequency?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wanted to get some opinions on oil changes. I use Mobil-1 full synthetic in my 2000 4.7 liter Dakota. With gas prices high, my truck is strickly a pleasure vehicle and only put on 2K miles in the last year.

I was going to change the oil every 5K but at that rate I would be about 2-3 years between oil changes.

Does Mobil-1 synthetic have to be changed after a certain period of time, regardless of mileage?

Thanks!

Kinda curious about this myself. I also run Mobil 1 in my Dak and it is a daily driver, but I still only manage about 6K miles a year. At that rate I would be changing the oil every 10 months or so (5K oil change interval). Not sure if I should change it sooner based on the time interval.

If your warranty is gone, you can do pretty much whatever you want for oil change intervals. The usual recommendation is 3000 miles between changes. Less than 3000 miles travelled in a year definitely throws a wrench in the works.

For more than 500,000 miles on the 3.9 automatic, and that many on all the other vehicles I've had; I have used Amsoil's, Oil Analyzers, Inc. to periodicly check engine and transmission oil.

Oil Analyzers does a spectrographic analysis, comprehensive stuff, and tells the condition of the oil, so they can tell you if it needs changing.

I have the Amsoil By-Pass filter system, mounted the only place there is room, under the right side of the bed. The by pass filter cleans down to 5 microns. Amsoil's full-flow filter is rated for 25,000 miles between changes.

Using this system I easily go 30 to 70,000 miles between changes, or more.

Sometimes my truck idles a lot, pretty much running all day, as I do my courier thing. The natural low oil pressure of our engines means there is little flow through the filter and there is more blowby to dirty the oil, hence changing more often.

Using the new Amsoil Ea Filter alone, you should easily be able to go 25,000 miles between changes with Mobil-1. Why? It was originally rated for 30,000 miles between changes.

That should help your pocketbook.

Shatto - you truly are a jerk. Period. You didn't even read his question.

Jerry - I was in a similar position with my last truck. Was only putting about 4,000 miles a year on it. I spoke with numerous people (from mechanics to chemists to lab techs), and the average consensus seemed to be about a year in a seasonal environment (fall, winter, summer, etc). From what I could gather, the reasoning had to do with the condensation, and subsequent oxidized contaminants, that are present in your engine after a year, even with synthetic, even with very low mileage. Hope this helps.

Again - Shatto, get a clue. I will never ever buy Amsoil for just one reason. That reason being the disrespect all of you Amsoil 'sponsors' have for the intelligence of us 'Average Joes'.

Take care,

Eric -- http://photos.yahoo.com/jes_96

Most synthetics I've seen are good for atleast 6 months of sitting. I actually think Mobil 1 should be good for up to a year of sitting in your engine. Like Eric says though, it has a lot to do with condensation in your engine. The oil doesn't break down like conventional oils do, but it still eventually needs to be changed after sitting.

No, Lads, I did read the question.

Jerry asked about oil change frequency. I talked about my frequency. One end of the spectrum, so to speak.

What I should have addressed is his need for an oil that will tend to stay where is should be, not drained back into the pan, leaving him with a dry start.
Yes, Amsoil has something for that too; AMS-Oiler, Pre Charger. pumps oil throughout the engine before it is started.

Yup -- just one more post to remind me that the only oils I recommend are Mobil 1 and Redline. Thanks Shatto.

Thanks for all the input.

I think it would be safe just to go ahead and change the oil on a yearly basis if the mileage limit has not been met.

WOW!! glad to see we have some people here to actually admit to being average joes!. Darn, that's one reason why I have almost stopped coming to www.dodgedakotas.com is because of Amsoil. You are 100% right and so far the "sponsors" are arrogant and will not listen to anything a supposedly inferior individual says. YES, I HIGHLY recommend Mobil 1. Castrol Syntec is also good. Haven't tried Redline but may in the future.

For what it's worth ... a little off-topic. I use Mobil 1 in all my engines (except the bike - that gets Rotella T Synthetic due to the wet clutch set-up), but I find Redline makes very good products for diffs, x-fer cases, trannies, et cetera. They are very specialized. For instance, Redline makes a gear oil that I use in my track/beater car (96 Nissan 240SX) because it has bronze bushings in the tranny. I believe it's called MT-90. It's GL-4 compliant, but not GL-5. The additives in the GL-5 oils will actually degrade the bronze bushings over time. Redline also makes a GL-5 that I use in the diffs since it has the friction modifiers in it for the limited slip and the diff doesn't have the bronze bushings. Again - sorry about being a bit off-topic, but I hope this helps someone somewhere along the line. It certainly helped me when a few buds clued me in to the nuances of Redline. Great product.
