Subject: smanually shifting automatic?
IP: Logged

Message:
lately i've been experimenting with manually shifting my automatic from 1st to 2nd to D. I like the response from it when i need it, but i did have a few questions. i've noticed that sometimes when i shift from 2nd into drive that 2nd gear doesn't shift to 3rd and keeps climbing the rpms till i let off then it shifts. is that bad for the transmission? and what's the best rpm to shift at for all three? i've been shifting them at 4500 rpms. thanks for the input.

There is a reason why your truck is an automatic. Because it was not designed to be shifted manually. I am sure that doing this evey now and then would not really harm the tranny, but if you are doing this quite often and running the RPM's up to about 4500...then I would say this would eventually damage your transmission and engine. My dakota is a 5 speed and the shift light comes on normally around 15-1800 RPM. An automatic will shift at different RPM ranges depending on how much acceleration you are giving the engine. I would not personally recommend frequently shifting an automatic manually, nor run the RPMs up that high either. Just my 2 cents.

The OEM setup for an automatic is not intended for manual shifting from a performance standpoint, and you could eventually cause damage. Not sure which tranny you have, but if available, a shift kit like something from TransGo makes your tranny fully controllable from a manual standpoint. It will extend tranny life under normal and performance situations, and will make it user friendly in the manual control mode. I had a setup like this (B&M shift kit)in a '69 Charger with 727 auto. It was the best of both worlds, and it never broke despite constant hammering.

It decides when to upshift. You can manually downshift or hold it in a lower gear, but you cannot manually make it upshift until it decides to.
