Subject: What do you pull with your V6?

We bought trucks, right? Well, I'm curious what we can pull with them. I'm dreaming of boats, and a friend of mine (with a V6 Toyota 4X4 - yuck!) pulls a 3400 lb. boat and ... doesn't do it especially gracefully. How do our V6 Daks do in this area? If you post, if you happen to know your axle ratio that would be helpful as well. I'm considering swapping to an R/T's 3.92 LSD axle.

TIA!

With the 3.92 differential, you'll have no problems towing at all. Save yourself some money and just upgrade your 8.25" Diff. The R/T Diff is a 9.25".

I pull a 18' fish&ski with my 2000 CC. I chose the auto tranny to make it a little easier getting up the launch ramp. The Dak is much better than the Toybox I had previously. No problems at all pulling or stopping my boat. I have the 3.55 rear end and am seriously considering upgrading to the 3.92. If anyone has made this change post your results. I want to learn everything I can before I start this project. Thanks.

I pull a 1500lb + popup camper with mine.
Both DAK1 and DAK2 had V6 ,5spd, with 3.21 axel
have hauled the camper from Chitown to Ark.(where DAK1 was killed)no problems and DAK2 has pulled camper from Chitown to KY.on numerous occasions
and has pulled U-Hauls on numerous occasions.Never a problem and maintains around 20 to 22 Mpg.on the highway. 3.21 rearend is good for towing around 3500lbs. If you look at 2002 models according to (www.4adodge.com)almost all
Dakota's use the Corporate 8.25 rearend (all axel
ratios and LSD is in the 8.25 axel.

I've pulled numerous U-Haul trailers, nothing larger than a loaded 5'x8', and the 3.9 has never complained. One thing i do need, i feel, is some heavier duty springs for the back end....does anyone know where i can find these?

Thanks for all the responses, guys! I'm at ease with the idea now. Definitely going to upgrade to the 3.92 and LSD, not just for towing tho (heh heh). Boat I'm dreaming of is around 3,000 lbs w/trailer (but maybe 4,400 w/water ballast for a couple feet before draining - not sure how that works yet) and will occassionally go cross country if I have anything to say about it.

Should I consider upgrading to Powerslot rotors & pads up front beforehand? I have plenty of time, and don't want to spend the $$ on optional trailer brakes - think they're hydraulic for this one.

Thanks again!

I pulled a trailer weighing approx. 2,500 lbs. with my V6, but only for distance of about 20 miles. My dak has the 3.55 rear, although it pulled it fairly easily, I probably wouldn't do it again. All my towing experience has been with big trucks pulling horses a fair distance. The common opinion amongst horse people is that the truck should be heavy enough to stop a big trailer loaded with live cargo.

I have a 1990 Dak. Pull a 16 ft. ski boat all the time and have for years. In Michigan and Florida and between. Just a simple V6 and it runs fine. Use to pull 2 Artic Cat snowmoblies in winter time in Michigan too. No problem. About the V6 Toyota, No offense to anyone, but what do you expect from a import pick up. Only America can do it right. 2001 SLT plus, 4x4 3.9v6 3.92

I just moved across country... from missouri to New Hampshire. I got a U-haul Auto transport (big one) and towed my wifes car behind my truck...

It was smooth sailing the entire way (one i figured out how to stay in the lines!). THe only thing i had to do was leave OD off all the time...

Also the only time i ever had problems was when i was going through the eastern side of Pensilvania. Damn those mountains...!

i topped out at about 55mph. i was still booging past those big old mack trucks (prob going 25 mph).

Anyway, thought it might help ya.
-Dave

BTW i think towing tanked my rotors, so keep a good watch on em... after i moved, the dealership had to replace them, they were scarred...
Never rode the break either.

oh boy... how do check what gears you have? simple, there are two ways. the easy way is to go to your glove box, open it up and look at the white paper taped to the bottom of it. somewhere on there it'll tell you whether you have a 3.21 or 3.55. it'll be in an 8 1/4 corporate rear end.

or number 2, get on your hands and knees, and look at the actual housing... there should be at least one little tag on one of the bolts, just read what it says on it.

finally, as to the ...is it easy to change them question, unless you are going into serious racing, or have globs of money to blow on it, don't bother. it's more work than its worth. it was a $50 option from the factory, or a $450 option if you do it yourself.

those are just my 2 cents.

no mercy,
Excuse me but I think you had better check on things BEFORE you make statements. I have had 2
"2000" DAK"s both are /were (DAK1 dead)V6"s
both have/had 5spd"s and both have/had the
3.21 rear axel in them.I will admit though most
dealers would order them with the 3.55 or the 3.92 axels. The stock configuration was with the 3.21.If I remember correctly though the V8s were
stock with the 9.25 rear end and 3.55 gears.

Well, I haven't _towed_ anything yet do to a lack of a hitch. But seeing as I'm moving to Florida in a few months, I'll be trying it. I'm not concerned.

We _did_ put about 28 bales of hay in the truck though. Stacked them up really nice. Truck didn't complain, but got a bit bouncy in the back when you went over bumps.

Are there more than one type of spring that comes on these? According to my sheet, my truck equates to a 3/4ton Light-Duty. I found that to be impressive. Is that normal, or an option? It takes a lot of stuff in the back to make the rear squat a bit.

For those of you wanting to improve your suspension when towing or hauling, you should look into Roadmaster Active Suspension Systems. Much cheaper and easier than replacing springs and maintains your comfy ride when not loaded. These systems really do work to stabilize the truck and are usually about $200.00. You can find them on speedtweaks web site.
