what type of fluid does one put in a manual transmission? all i ever see or hear about is ATF (automatic trans fluid). can you use the same for manual transmissions?

Some manual trannies in the 1980s had ATF; later ones had 5W-30 engine oil. If you have the owner's manual it should tell.

The requirement for my 91 NV-2500 5-speed was 10W30 motor oil, it had heavy gear lube in it when I got it last year, but would grind going into second when it was cold. I didn't think that was right so I did some research and found a guy with a Chrysler Service manual for the 91 Dakota and it said use 10W30 in the 5-speed. What year is your truck and what transmission?

how can you tell what transmission you have? my dakota is a 95. i think it's an AX 15 (just located owners manual which says SAE75W-90 API GL-5 gear lubricant.

1. After refill check oil level
2. With engine automatic transmission operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in NEUTRAL and add fluid as needed.
