I have a 02 v6 4x4 dak with 24k on it and already have problem with my rotors, I think dodge put on cheap junk rotors, should have them rotated or should I replace them? Should I replaced the pads also ( they really do not look bad)?
Anyone had the same problem!

I beleive you are referring to warped rotors and having them turned right??? I do not recommend turning them simply because all your doing is making them thinner = more likely to warp from heat and braking more quickly every time you turn them... I remember the last time I had mine turned "stock brakes", they warped once again in the next 1000 to 1500 miles and this was the first time they had ever been turned... I was not very happy as of this point...

What I did to completely elliminate warpage was went to Auto Zone and bought some of the XTREME rotors... These are dirrectional rotors with the holes and slots in them... They have also been heat treated to resist all warping and are much thicker than the stock rotors... I now have been using them for the last 7000 miles with no warpage and excellent stopping from the "performance part" of the rotors... I went ahead and replaced the pads simply because it is much better off to spend a few extra dollars on the pads that way you have no grooves that may be cut into the rotors from the old pads and simply because you now have new pads... And from the looks of the stock pads that were on my truck, I could had easily put another 80,000 miles on them...

I just went with the stock pads from dodge... They're kind of a mix inbetween the lifetime pads and the cheaper pads that you can get anywhere...

Only draw back is that the rotors cost 85$ apiece + the pads which were around 40$... I saw this as a chance to get the best fairly cheap compared to others and as long as they never warp they will pay for themselves by the time you start figuring up how much it cost to have them turned or replaced every month or year...

Around here the mountains can be very treterous on brakes and brake pads...

Your breaks are one of the most important systems on the vehicle. I do alot of city driving, stop-and-go kind of traffic. I run though the stock type pads very easily. Go with an upgrade rotor as suggested in the previous post as well as some higher quality pads. Lifetime pads are good, you may pay $40-$80 a pair, but consider that over the lifetime of the vehicle. I've been in some close calls driving with these idiots in the large cities, it's a good thing to have more stopping power.

Insurance is nice, but i love my truck more.

also, check out for some shops that do breaks, if you don't feel comfortable doing them yourself. You can find places that will warrent the pads AND labor for the lifetime.

Greg or anyone, I am interested in putting those type of rotors that you mention above. But, I have a question. Can the slotted and holes rotor be turned? Or, what type of maintenance or procedure is needed for changing pads on this type of rotor?

I'm sure if it ever came down to it that they could be turned just like any other rotor, but the point is, unless something just went majorly wrong or overlooked they should never need turning because they are heat treated and when put on with new pads as well they will never have surface scratches wore into them...

You will also notice after you get them that they are quite heavier than the stock rotors = thicker and much better...

Hope I helped you some allthough the response is a little late...

Greg, Thanks for input. We in PR do not have an Auto Zone. Maybe I can buy online. Can you get me a part number? Or perhaps another alternative.

Again, thanks.

Ok, I just went and tried to find the boxes "becasue I ussually keep them for storage", but only could find the actuall boxes and not the covers that had the part numbers on them so I went online to http://www.autozone.com and looked up the part number for my truck since I could not see anywhere that you had listed the year and drive type of yours... More than likely unless yours is as well a 99' 2wd, it will take a different part number...

These are the part #'s for mine ---

left side "passenger side" 5382LX
right side "drivers side" 5382RX

OH and they're AIMCO EXTREME's rotors...

They were both listed for $88.99 online...

Hope I was of a little more assistance...

Greg

I put on a set of Raybestos BruteStop drilled and slotted rotors paired with a set of Raybestos SuperStop pads that I bought from rockauto.com. $80 each for the rotors and $40 for the pads. Best $200 I'v spent on this truck so far. I'v had them on for about 6 months, 10-15K, and they are like new.

I'v had drilled rotors turned before, $15 each, but it's a royal pain in the azz to find a shop that will turn them. Most shops say they won't turn them because the holes in the rotors screw up the brake lathe's cutter. Autozone, nope, Checker, nope, Pepboys, nope,,,, Well y'all can kizz my azz!
