I Just bought an '03 Dakota SXT, with only 2900 miles on it.
It seems to be quite peppy in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. but as I'm
going along the freeway, just barely up hill and a little head
wind, it I had to leave it in 4th to get the truck to go over
75 mph and when I'd put it into 5th it would get weak and
slow back down to 70. in 4th it is at about 4000 rpm when
over 75. All of this is with the gas pedal floored. Is this
normal for these types of 6 cyl engines? Do I need to keep
it in 4th until I'm in the 70's to cruise in 5th in the 80's?

big trouble if thats what your truck is really doin. 4000 in 4th should be around 85 or so and having to down shift from 5th to 4th to go up a slight hill is not right. even with a head wind.

Sounds messed up to me, I take my putzy '91 3.9 pre-Mag (125 hp) up and down some good hills up and down I-44 between St. Louis and Springfield MO w/ no down shifting required in the 5-speed, may lug down to 68-69 mph, but I don't push it too hard or to the floor (after all it is 13 years old w/ 130,000+ miles) Your 175 hp Mag V-6 should get it fine. (No mods or rebuild on my engine so most likely still 125 hp.) Is the clutch slipping w/ those RPMs and lack of power?

Dude, i think u got jacked. Your truck sounds like its a piece of crap. I got a 96 Sport with the 3.9 and i barely do 3.5k at 110 mph(which my truck is governed at, and living in germany before made that suck). U need to get some mad work done on it or get ur money back. Oh yeah, my truck has over 95000 miles on it.

I also have an 03 Dakota SXT V6 4x4 5sp. I just bought it last night. It has 13000 miles. Driving home on the highway I noticed that it was a bit sluggish in 5th. I had to down shift at about 70mph into 4th just to get momentum. This doesn't seem right.

it all depends on your rear end gears, a 4x4 v6 5 speed dak is not goion to b the fastest truck out there, seeing as it would seriously b lackin in the weight to power ratio, and if u have 3.20 rear end gears thats guna f u up even more. swap in some 3.90's and i bet u everything will b better
