I have a problem with that all started with not passing smog in CA. I didn't pass CA smog 2 at 15 MPH. I have replaced the O2 sensor, cat, ERG valve and Thermostat. After all of this I am getting a check engine light. Didn't have an error prior. Error is 22 (water temp sensor). So i replace it. disconnect bat. to reset error. No luck, still have the error. anyone have any sugestion where to go now?

Double check the part you replaced is working. take a DVOM digital volt ohm meter, and hook it up to the sensor, set the meter to ohms, and take a lighter or hot water and heat the sensor up, the resitance should go down i think, it might go up but either way make sure the resistance is not staying the same.. If it changes go disconnect the battery again, if this doesnt work go have a scan tool clear the code.

Check the wiring???? Great post, mark. You really helped out on this one. Care to throw out any other obvious suggestions in the form of a question. Here's a suggestion ask for more symptoms like "with a tach what is the idle rpm, what is temp, closed loop when warm, performance, noises, mileage, smoke, or any other flags?" Just "did you check if the wires were loose"?? Pure genious. This forum is grateful for such insight.

If it helps the when it warms up the rpms rise to ~800-900 then drop to the point of almost stalling. temp guage gets up to about the 1/3 mark. Put it in gear and it maintains a constant rpm. No smoke. truck has approx 120k milage. Truck runs fine other wise. thanks.

Engine temp sensor A/C side 2 wires
Guage sender Alt side 1 wire

Put a scanner on it and watch it most will step
2 degrees at a time during warm up 180 182 184
186 and so forth. if it don't bad connection or
pinched wire

When you reset did you disconect batt and hold
key all the way to start position for 20 to 30
secs, just disconecting the batt will not drain
the capasiters enough to reset unless you leave
it disconected for a few hours

check all your ground points under hood

So does anyone know where the water temp sensor is located. my 95 dakota only has the temp sender for the gage that I see on the block?
