Hey,
Wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
I have an 87 Dak 3.9L 5sp 2 wheel drive with
115km (i'm a canadian boy!) and wondering what transmission fluid Dodge recommends.

I just came from the dealership and they told me 10w30 Engine oil! I'm still learning mechanics, and was looking for a second opinion on that.

Did these trucks come with a hydraulic clutch?

Please help!

What dealer did you go to ?
That is B.S...
You need either genuine Chryco fluid
or good synthetic..

Yep, I have a '91 Dakota w/ the NV-2500 5-speed and according to the ASE Certified repair manual from Chrysler, it uses 10W30 motor oil. Bought my 91 last year and noticed a slight grind going into second when it was cold, did some research and found a guy w/ a Dakota just like mine and asked if he had a owners manual. Better yet he had the huge repair manual put out by Chrysler for the 91 Dakota(I have one for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee) had every detail imaginable detail and yes the tranny took 10w30 motor oil. Drained the tranny and it had typical heavy gear oil in in, the kind you put in the old manual transmissions like my Ford had or rear axle. After filling with 10w30 Castrol GTX over a year ago it shifts smooth and no grind going into second. Oh, and the 91 Shadow we used to have used 5W30, so motor oil in a Chrysler manual transmission is certainly not unheard of.

Yup...ATF in my 1985 Daytona, but 5W-30 engine oil from the factory in my 1992 Daytona.

Thanks everyone for your information. Truck runs great, except for when trying to get it into first. *Sometimes* it's a little tricky to go in. The truck sat for a couple of years, and when I bought it the first thing I did was change the engine oil, and replaced the air filter. Next will be plugs and wires, but when changing the oil it was like water. I figure it broke down from sitting, so if the tranny uses engine oil too, I'm changing it right now!

Thanks again,
