Subject: going into N without clutch- bad?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got a 2000 5spd and I have been throwing it into neutral without pressing the clutch when I slow down for lights. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything and by doing this I don't have to use the clutch at all until the light turns green and I put it into first. Is this ok to do or should I press the clutch whenever I move the stick, no matter where it's going?

Yeah, but what diference does it make to you?

You still have clutch in some time, just delays it. Doesn't actually save you using the clutch at all, which would be the only up-side that I can see.

well the difference it makes is that I don't have to move my left leg through the slowing down process and while being stopped. If it's unnesscessary then I'd rather not do it.

mike, it's not that hard especially now with the sync's in the tranny's nowadays. you get a feel for it. hit the rpm's right & just push in gear.

Well I have never owned a maunal and if i do maybe then I will understand....I am pretty sure IF your racing you have to use the clutch. right?

But on normal driving I guess not.

The thing with shifting with out using the clutch is mostly timming. When the load and speed of the input shaft and the output shaft are equal then you can shift into or out of gear. The trick is to figure out when and at what RPM to do it at. When your close to the right RPM holding a light pressure on the shifter will make it pop out, it should be easy. Poping into gear is a little trickier.
The best way to learn is on someone elses vehicle cause you WILL grind the gears a few times going into gear.
