Anyone know good stuff to get semi deep scratches out of the paint? I've tried the mothers scratch remover & turtle wax's Scratch remove with the Lipstick looking wax, Now i'm down to turtle wax's "Rubbing compound" but am not really sure if this is what i wanna be doing to my paint, Took her to a body shop and they are sayen 150$ CDN to take the 2 inch scratch off the door..... it's not wide, just long..... but there are more of these apearing al the time so it could get costly....

Also, IS there anyway to stop the paint from getting scratched al the time, it seems every time i wash the truck (evey 2-3 days) there are more scratches....

Thanks in advance.
Drew

If the scratch goes through the paint then you're going to need it either professionally done or you're going to have to touch it up (which will look crappy).

If the scratch is just into the clear coat, then you can have it wet-sanded then buffed out and it will look like new.

The clear coat makes up for a HUGE portion of the paint on the exterior of a vehicle. The color (Red in your case) is thinner than a dollar bill. The clear coat is probably as thick as an envelope (not the best examples, but that's just what I have infront of me right now). Most scratches don't penetrate the clear coat all the way, but when they do, 99 times out of 100 they're going to penetrate that little layer of colored paint as well.

I have a small scratch on my blue dak and it is white. Is the blue the clearcoat and the white the actual paint?

The white is the primer. Basically, you're down to the metal. If you leave it untreated, it will more than likely begin to rust or bubble in the future. If it's in an inconspicuous place, like below the body lines, I would just touch it up with some touch up paint. Be careful though, some places will charge a lot for the paint (I'm talking up to $20 for a pint or so), depending on the color of course.

I touched up a couple scratches on my 01 Dak, it's black and it doesn't match exactly, but I figure it's better than it rusting some day.

Here's what I did on my 93 ranger. There were a couple places where the paint was scratched. The tiny scratches didn't bother me too much other than the fact that I knew it would rust or whatever some day. So, I took a can of clear coat, and wet sanded around the little area with 600 grit paper and I sprayed a little on, let it dry then sprayed a litle more on.

Now, don't get me wrong, there's places you can't do this on a new vehicle, but this was a 93 ranger and it was on the bed side, but it's a good, cheap, and final fix to the problem.
