I am getting the muffler replaced on my V6 today. I wanted to hear what peoples opinions were regarding my proposed setup:
Dynomax 17748, single 2 1/2 all the way, dumped out the side in front of the rear axle? Any opinions on in front of the rear axle, vs. behind? I have also heard the stock y-pipe is very restrictive on these trucks. Should I look into replacing that as well?

The only mods on this engine are: V8 TB (only had for two weeks), autolite 3923's, k&N drop in, napa brass. I am looking to get a little more power for when I am towing our camper. The truck is great on the flats, but needs a little more go for the steep hills.

I have the dynomax muffler you are getting
(Dynomax 17748, single 2 1/2) with 2 1/2 pipe in and going out and it sounds great but not noisy and comfortable to listen to in the cab. I have my tailpipe at the rollpan where it dumps out. The stock y pipe is not mandrel bent and doesn't flow as well as a mandrel bent one, jba headers makes a replacement y pipe but unless supercharging your v6, you are just throwing away money. Take it from someone who has dumped literally thousands on his 99 v6. You may want to consider 3.91 gears instead of the stock 3.55s. I recently installed those with no loss in gas mileage and I have a VERY HEAVY FOOT. Roller rockers are a good mod the 1.7s from harland sharp get you another 15horses I believe. Any other mod than a supercharger is kind of a waste if you want to build real power. Five ponies here and five there don't do it for me anymore.

Thanks Mark.

If I supercharge anything, it will have at least 8 cylinders, lol. So, I guess I will leave the y-pipe alone. I just got the muffler replaced a few minutes ago with the Dynomax, and I do like the sound. Not too loud, especially in the cab. Gears will be next, but they are a few months down the road, but might be preceeded with a shift improver kit.
