Yo Ron,
I had a similiar problem with my Sport Dakota, 96, I replaced the water pump, which definetly did need replacing, but the noise, a loud metalic tinging sound remains the same. If your fan is loose than the water pump needs replacing. As for the noise, I am going for the belt tensioning pully next. As I said before my 78 Nisson 280Z had the same engineering snafu on the fan/water pump arrangement and my fan and fan clutch fell off after a lengthy trip. Good luck with the pump replacement. Not as hairy a job as I thought it would be.

Ron, I think its the water pump as well, from what you said. While you have the water pump off, check the pully's and see if any that don't turn smooth, or make any noise, or loose. Replace as neccissary. I did have a job a few weeks ago where I was working on a 95 Ford Mini Van and it was making all kinds of noise, I took the belt off and found an idler pully bearing bad, I replaced that, but still had a high pitched squealing noise. I checked the belt closely, and found many smooth spots, so I replaced the belt with a new belt a 1/2 inch shorter and that stopped the noise altogether.
Good LUck
