Does anyone know if the late model Dakotas have a different size bed than the pre-97 models? I.E. do they take the same size topper, etc?

Every dakota from 87-04 has the exact same size on the inside of the bed (exception there was an optional 8', but most are 6.5') I know the 97+ bedliner was in my 93 a few years ago. the inside fit perfectly. If you look, the bed rails are different, Gen I & II have squared rails, while Gen III's have more curve to them. You would have to try the topper to see if it fits.

if they are the same size, why does every manufacturer of tonno covers and bed toppers list different part numbers for the same model for pre 97 and 97 up models? same thing for bed liners too. get out your tape measure and you will find the 97 ups are both a bit wider and a bit longer.

i would guess that while they are labeled 6.5' the actual design of the bed surface is prolly different, including the rail shape/design.
also don't forget that 3rd dimension! guessing its prolly a tad different too, floor to rails and rails to cab top.

I had a Gen III over the rail plastic bed liner in my '93. The only part that didnt line up was the tops of the rails. A 93 the top of the rails are the same width from front to back while the GenIII's start skiny then widen and then get skiny again. Otherwise the insides were indentcal. the bed groves may be different, but with a liner its not important. I now have a spray in liner with a flush top fiberglass cover. The cover will fit all 6.5' Dakotas, I tried it on my friends '03.

I took a 97 and later model tonneau cover and put it on my 91. It seems the rails were a little further out but not by much. I trimmed the tonneau rails just a little with a dremel tool. You could not tell the cover was for an 97.

the dakota takes a midsize box the s10s and rangers are too small and fullsize are too big. The box i bought is just for a dakota. A dakota box fits about any year dakota.
