Subject: How to check the voltage?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a digital multimeter...how do I check the voltages on my TPS sensor and my 02 sensor? I don't just mean which wires do I use, but HOW do I do it? I know how to probe bare wires, but not how to do the insulated ones going to the sensors... Yes, I do realize this is prolly a stupid question, but I've never done it before and I'd prefer to save some money by NOT screwing up. lol

Thanks,
Josh

Okay...nevermind checking the TPS voltage...figured that out, but how do I check the voltage on the O2 sensor?

I think it MIGHT be going bad but not sure...here's why I think that:

-My engine has been idling quite poorly--new throttle body not too long ago, IAC shouldn't be that dirty yet.
-My gas mileage sucks
-My spark plugs are white where they should be tan (look just like they did brand new) and all the metal surfaces around the threads and stuff are black and covered with soot. Cause: running too rich, correct?

If those symptoms are describing something else and not the O2 sensor, please respond.

Oh yeah, I increased my TPS voltage from .68v to .75v. Not a real noticeable change, but it's a lil better than before at off-idle response.

I think it is going to be the IAC, unless your rpms are really pumping up and down. Does the car idle bad when cold ?, cause the O2, unit only kicks in after closed loop.

It idles bad cold and warm...I have my doubts about it being the IAC though. I just bought a new throttle body like 2 months ago and I thoroughly cleaned the IAC and IAC port before I did it. It idled fine then. It shouldn't have gotten THAT dirty yet.

And don't tell me it ain't the O2...I'm looking for a quick fix to my gas mileage problems! lol

The o2 has 4 wires, you need to take a stick pin
solder a wire on it (red plus volt meter) and
ground.

should vary between like .1 .2 to .9 1 volt and
just keep jumping back and forth

You need to be sure you have the correct wire
because there is a constant voltage on the heater
element in the o2
