Hi, I am replacing the accumulator and orifice tube as the previous owner used super seal and it hardened and clogged everything.

Just wondering, can I just use those recharge kits in a can, or since its completely empty and has been opened up, is it necessary to have a dealer evacuate the system first, then recharge?

Thanks

thanks, so can I draw a vacuum using compressed air and a tool, or does this require a special machine?

Pros use a good vacuum pump and draw 29" of vacuum for up to an hour, to get all the moisture out. I have successfully (but don't recommend) two very crude techniques:

1) Using engine vacuum to draw it down (20") when converting to R134a. That system still works fine 6 years later.

2) A hand vacuum pump, takes awhile, but can draw 29" of vacuum. A good workout, like squeezing a tennis ball.

Yeah, be sure to vacuum the system out, my neighbor helped me do my '91. Vacuumed it out and put the 134a kit stuff in and that was a year ago, still works great. I replaced the compressor and dryer on a friends van, didn't vacuum it out and it doesn't work as good/efficient, better than nothing but not as good. Told them if they want it really cold, have a pro vacuum it out and recharge it, since I don't have a vacuum pump.

Check out this website:

http://www.ntxtools.com/Merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=01

Click on "Air Conditioning" on the left hand column.

This Robinair 34970 air pump works great for $50.

You still need a manifold gauge set which they sell. I believe AutoZone has a manifold gauge set for $35. Make sure it has the correct fittings for R-134A.

Thanks alot guys, big help. I was told to replace the orifice tube and accumulator as the sealant has hardened and clogged these, the rest I have to flush out.

When replacing the accumulator I will add oil, but with flushing the rest of the system do I have to add more oil for the rest of the system? Also, can I flush the compressor? Do I engage the ac to get the compressor spinning as I do this?

Thanks

As long as you have the whole system open, I'd flush it all (brake cleaner and compressed air works, but vacuum well afterward as compressed air has moisture in it). Then pour about 2 oz of new oil in the compressor and rotate by hand, add about 2 oz to the condenser, a little more in the evaporator, then re-assemble, vacuum and recharge.

Use PAG oil for original R134a system; R12 mineral oil for systems that remain R12; and ester oil for converted systems.

Put the oil in the compressor, that is where it needs to be for proper lubrication.

Also when you get the 29" vacuum on the system you have to let it keep drawing for at least an hour to get the moisture out of the system. You should see if there is an in line filter that goes inside one of the tubes. It will prevent any foreign materials from getting to your compressor.

Also use dry nitrogen only to flush the system, compressed air can cause an explosion.People have been killed doing this.
