I've got a feeling the intake I'm using is what is killing my gas mileage...I mean shoot, it IS drawing in mostly hot air...I too am using a K&N filter, though it's not the drop-in like you guys are talking about.

Josh, hot air won't hurt your mpg, if anything it might actually help it. If you feel like it's on the low side I'd look elsewhere for a problem.

Just out of curiousity... why wouldn't it hurt it? If a cold air intake helps gas mileage, wouldn't bringing in warm air hurt it...or is it only helping gas mileage due to the increased amount of flow?

Josh

cold air is for HP hot air is for better mpg the colder the air the better hp for cold air intake it can move more cfm than your stock intake so your V6 dose not need to work as hard to suck in the air so you would get better mpg with the cold air intake if you just cut put holes in you intake box it would do about the same thing as getting a cold air intake

Wow, was that all one sentence?
Cold air is better for both HP and gas mileage - they are not mutually exclusive. Denser air (colder) will make more power; hotter, leaner air will make it run richer. But the difference in mpg is minimal, probably less than 1 mpg.

So tell me, why don't automakers eliminate the cold air tube and get better mileage from hot underhood air? Why do hood scoops, which suck in cold air, add power?

The greater benefit of more flow outweighs the temperature difference, but given the same air intake setup, hot air will not quite yield the same performance and gas mileage as cool air.

just a comment about posts on previous page. I don't have numbers or comparisons, and I would prefer the straight tube rather than ribbed for intake. BUT, laminar flow is not always better, some designs incorporate turbulance, this helps mixing the air/fuel better.

Also, the tophat may be larger than the TB for a reason. Your engine sends pulses from the moving parts (ie piston, valves, etc). These pulses at certain rpm's will be flowing backwards in the intake, while the engine is trying to suck in fresh air. The intake, including tophat, is designed to operate with this in mind.

Thats a very general idea of it, of course there are many calculations and simulations involved to give numbers.

I agree 100%.

Bob, correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I understand it, the PCM uses signals from the IAT and MAP sensors to determine density and adjust injector pulse width accordingly (I know O2 affects it also but we're talking about IAT here). In other words, colder air=more fuel. That's why you get the slight performance gain, but it does take more gas to get it.
I know everyone will get slightly different results - there are so many other variables - but theoretically it should be close to a wash mpg-wise.

Right. And if you have more power, you could get better mileage by being easier on the throttle.

But adding hot air won't show the dramatic improvement that Larry hints at in that other post.

I was just trying to reassure Josh that breathing engine compartment air probably isn't hurting his mpg.

Probably less than 1/2 mpg loss or less, not really noticeable.
