if you park it and buy a geo your mileage will improve.

Just try the basic stuff for starters. Make your engine breathe better and that should help. Try a high flow air filter, and a cat-back like you have. That should begin to help. Next, you might want to give your engine an overall tuneup, being that it is an '87. Definetly spark plugs, timing, possibly synthetic oil, etc. This would be a good start and should give you at least a couple MPG's of improvement.

I put on a tonneau cover and went from 16.5 to 19.2. Then put in Mobil 1 and I'm at and even 20. Just ordered a K&N air filter from fox-performance.com this week.

ok thanks guys..

and no well, im not buyin a geo, we all cant be as gay as you...

i forgot to mention, but i have a tonneau cover too. right now with what i have im gettin about 13 to 14 mpg. Im replacing the holley air cleaner with a K&N when i get some Xtra cash.

As for the plugs and wires and timing, does any one have any advice on what to use? ive heard autolites, but not sure which ones. will changin over to a 180 degree thermostat help any?

I dont want to sink alot money into this motor.. its comin out next summer and being replaced by a 318. I just need to get a little better gas milage and power outta it b/c i am installing a 2" body lift and 31s this summer.

thanks.

From personal experience...my mpg dropped when I installed the 180*F thermo. Many others have said the same thing, but some have also claimed to have gained some.

For plugs...

Autolite 5224 is stock range truck plug. 3924 is stock range, standard plug. 3923 is one range cooler. I recently switched to Splitfires...SF522D (stock range) gapped at .040 and my truck is running good. I also ran AP3923's (platinum tip) gapped at .040 and they weren't burning hot enough. If you get the Autolites, get either the regular tip or platinum tip...don't get the double platinum tip. I think the regular tip should be gapped at .035 and the platinum tip at .040, but don't quote me on that.

You may want to check the voltage on your O2 sensors too... with that low mpg, one could be going bad, causing your engine to run rich and your mpg to plummet. The voltage should be flip-flopping from like .1 to 1.0, etc... if it's staying fairly constant and not flip-flopping, it needs replaced. How many miles are on your truck? They are known to go at around 60k miles...but some will also last MUCH longer...

Also...lifting your truck and raising the tire size is prolly gonna decrease your gas mileage...so be prepared.
