Subject: Need help - Losing Power
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 3.9L V6 Dakota Sport with about 80K miles. On quick acceleration, I am losing power around 3,000 RPM. She keeps accelerating, but there is a noticable drop in power. I also had problems recently with power on uphill climbs on the interstate which I assume is related.

I replaced my plugs and wires last night, but still have the problem with acceleration. Does anyone out there have any ideas what might cause this?

Its the pulse ring inside your distributor. Need to replace the distributor. Had the same problem.

my 98 Dak 3.9, x cab seems to be getting down on power recently as well, although, I only notice it pulling my 2500lb boat up hill (she really labours, with a bit of engine rattle, as if im in too high a gear), so, I really have to Gear it down (5spd), but even then it complains.

I only have 47,000 Kilometers on the truck, would it still be the Distributor?, are we talking Distributor or Cap?, how expensive ?

I think we're talking the whole distributor. I just ordered a new distributor and rotor button. Total was $195. I will get $70 back as a core exchange on the old distributor.

I have always had problems towing things. I always have to run lower gears (which I suppose is normal for towing) but the real drag is when the A/C cuts off to divert more power to the engine.
