Subject: Tap accel. revs to 2500 rpm? why larry?
IP: Logged

Message:
I had recently done the TPS mod on my '98 V6 4X4, and I noticed that whenever the engine is up to temperature, in PARK, and I tap the accelerator, the engine will race to 2500 rpm for about 5 seconds then die back down to a normal idle. Oh yeah, before the TPS mod, I removed the TB and cleaned it well. Maybe I jacked up the plunger thing on the sensor closest to the distributor? Has anybody had this problem before? BTW, the high rpm thing does not happen when the engine is cold. Thanks in advance. Relf.

And I take it your momma was hooked on Ballpark Frank's?

ANYWAY...could be your IAC (the one with the plunger thing) or quite possibly one of your other sensors on the tb. I don't recall exactly what each one does. Another thing you could try is resetting your PCM and then start it, let it learn the idle (don't touch the pedal at all), shut it off after a few moments of idling...I think 30 seconds would work, do it again, then start it and drive it or whatever. See if it still does it after that.

You may just have the screws on the TPS a little
to tight, the rotating part goes through and comes
out under the plastic on the screw side and
someties will just touch and hang it up

just losten them a little

Or you may have done something to the IAC

also check for vac leaks

Larry, I bought a new IAC, and loosened the TPS (it wasn't tight anyways) and it is still doing the same thing! You mentioned vaccum leaks. Would an old plenum gasket create a vac. leak? When I removed my TB, the intake manifold looked dirty. Thanks again. Relf

P.S. would putting a little grease on the end of the throttle shaft before installing the TPS help with the problem? Relf.

correct me if i am wrong, but the same thing happend to my 98. And i believe there is a little star screw at the front of the tb that will need to be adjusted. Look for that, even though i could out of my mind.

Do you mean the idle adjust screw, sicminds? My engine idles fine. When the engine is up to temperature, in neutral, if I touch the throttle the engine revs itself to 2500 rpm. I'm thinking that it might be a vacuum leak. Relf.

I am having the same issue. I put on a V8 tb and new cable. I cleaned everthing via speedtweaks advice. My truck idles like a champ, but when I give it a baby tap on the gas...it revs to 3k then back down slowly.

I checked the wires and think I got all the hoses back on right. The TPS is not too tight, and I never messed with the IAC.

Please HELP

Thanks for replying Smoman, I still haven't fixed my problem, but I removed the IAC and looked at the conical plunger thing and it looks like it is not closing properly. The plunger may not be centered in the T.B. I will get another one to see if it works. I need to fix it soon in order to get it smogged (Calif.). Let me know what you find. Relf

My 98 Dak did the same thing after TB swap etc, never found out what it was, then it just went away and did't happen anymore, that was about 1 1/2 years ago.I think the PCM reset finally relearned and it took care of itself. Good luck.
PS my truck has passed CA smog check the past 2 times after all mods with no problems.

You need to be carfule with the TPS mod there is
a theshold you reach and than it will do that.

drop it back a little

center wire and ground and a digatal volt meter
needed

any time you play with the TPS you also need to
start shut down restart about 3 times so the comp
can learn the new volts
