Subject: Stalling at stop signs

Hey Guys. 1987, 2wd 3.9l. It's stalling (sometimes) or hesitates when I'm stopped and then step on the accelerator. If I press slowly on the gas pedal it'll putter along for a sec and then get up to speed with out dieing. For instance a quick stop and go at a stop light will stall the car.

I had the carb rebuilt last week and had it adjusted by the carb shop after I installed it. They say the carb is fine.

The car sat for about three weeks while I pulled off and replaced the carburetor. when I changed out the carb I also did the valve covers, cleaned and replaced the EGR valve, changed out the PCV valve and Hose. The spark plugs are new. The wires are older but dont seem to show any signs of wear.

I'm feeling some back pressure and think the catylytic converter might be blocked up but when I get it up to speed (highway, etc) it seems to run just fine. Also the egr hose that runs back to the cat is loose, held in place with some wire but not properly welded to the cat.

I also went around the engine with a hose to my ear listening for vacuum leaks but didnt notice any. I also added a can of dry gas lastnight.

I'm starting to get a little disheartened.

Thanks again.

When the last time you replaced the rotor and or distributor cap? If any of these are fouled it could cause what you are describing. It is the ony thing I can think of anyway.

One other thing, I noticed that it dosent actually stall. What happens is if I step on the gas hard, the engine just goes flat. No increase in RPM when I hit the accelerator hard from a stop or a slow roll. Then I back off the accelerator and press the pedal slowly and the rpms will climb.

Is this consistent with the cap and rotor being bad? Other possible causes I'm thinking of might be, fuel pump? throttle cable adjustment? transmission linkage? torque convertor?

It jsut sort of does nothing if I stomp the gas from a stop or slow roll. If I correct it by letting the pedal back up and pressing slowly it putters off, if I jsut stay down on the gass it'll stall.

Thanks again.

PS, if it wasnt for this forum I'd have probably junked this truck a while back. You should all feel proud that you've helped to keep a Gen1 from the scrap pile.

Too lean, either vacuum leak, low float level, or accelerator pump defective.

Boy thats a hard one call. I almost sounds like a timing issue. When the last time you had the timing checked? If it has been awhile it might be worth checking out. The timing could be advanced to far?? I think if it was in the fuel system you would have this problem at all times. Hope this helps

It was the accelerator pump. Not functioning at all. I have to pull the carb back off and give it back to the rebuild guys.

Thanks.

I just finished working on my husbands truck with the same problem... I did a process of elimination.. Pick up coil....Did a high pressure cleaning of the TB injectors...then I checked the EGR valve. It was found to be faulty... I replaced it and now the truck is running as good as a truck with 160,000 miles on it can...
