I did the brass cap and rotor, 7mm wires and champion (eom).40 plugs. At times there is slight pinging. What do U Dakota (engine) experts think?

Thanks,

try a 180 deg. t/stat & open the gap to .045 - .050. keeps my '00 from pinging.

if you have a 5.7 and are burning oil as well be sure to check the plenum gasket. That's the one on the bottom of the intake manifold.

how about giving the autolite 3923 plugs a shot.... there cheap, and are one haet range colder than stock. and yes, you will loose a little mileage going with a 180* t/s. I don't think it will be 2 MPG though........

just my .02

daffydak is right.. Some trucks may even gain
with a 180 therm , especially depending where you
live in the country..
Also if you haven't already try to get cooler air in to intake

I have a K&N fliter in, and like it.

Thanks,

Consider replacing your coolant temperature sensor (not the sending unit) and also the incoming air temperature (IAT) sensor.

Ronder, I did say to open the gap to .045 - .050. i'm running the Bosch platinums, not the +2 or +4's reg plat's. 1 range colder than stock, and a 180 stat. i too had slight pinging but doing those 2 things cured it. as far as mileage, i get a between 18 & 20 mpg in a heavy * QC 3.9 5spd w/ 3.55.

daddio- thanks, I missed it. I will try the .45!

2000 V6 , auto , bed cover, I think it has 3.80 or 3.90 rear end, 20 mpg.... just would like to get rid of that slight pinging!

Thanks,

Ronder :)

Pinging? now lets see. My 97 Dakota started pinging after Dodge did a tune up for me. I normally do my own but back issues changed all that. I have recently replaced plugs (Bosch Plat), cap, rotor, and wires. I noticed that the plugs I took out looked great but were gapped at 0.60 and as mentioned above the sticker calls for 0.40. I gaped the Bosch to 0.40 and now it runs like a champ without any pinging at all.

pinging is caused by pre-ignition, since pre-ignition happens BEFORE the plug sparks, how does changing the gap, therefor the characteristics, of something that happens AFTER the pre-ignition start change the pre-ignition problem? actually the problem may well be the brand of gasoline you use, different refineries use different chemical formulas in their gasoline, and that will lead to all sorts of things going on in the combustion chamber none of you never address. The service writer at Rouen C/D in woodville ohio asked me one day as to weather I was having a ping problem I said no and asked him why, he said he was doing an informal survey and that quite a few 3.9 5.2 and 5.9 owners had such problems, and the only common denominator with all the trucks was that the owners ALL, EVERY ONE OF THEM, used exclusivly B/P fuel both 87 and 89 grade. before changind anything mechanical try changing to a brand of fuel that you know for sure comes from a different refinery then the one you now get supplied by. I guess tho that in a way I am rather lucky where I live, B/P and Sun both have their own refineries within 34 miles of my house and Marathon has a fuel depot that mt bro in law drove for years ago and is now an engineer for that he says gets its fuel from a Marathon owned mid state refinery. so at least in my caes I really do have a choice.

Remember too, a lot of ping problems are seasonal. If you live in an area that gets cold enough to freeze the balls off a rhino you may notice this more. For you folks in Florida, try cranking the tunes.

when the thing requires 87 and it still knocks at 89 BUT runs fine on another brands' 87 there is something wrong with the brand that pings at 89, much better to use the right one at a buck 82 then the wrong one at 2.15 eh?
