Is a heat shield really needed for an intake? I know its not, but will it add any HP if there is one. I want to get the intense big mouth 7" but it doesnt have a heat shield on it. Any thoughts on a heat shield would be awesome.

I've made a cold air intake and made a heat shield for it. You don't want to suck hot air into your engine if you can avoid it. Yes there are some gains to be had. Hey drag racers use "cool cans" to keep the fuel ice cold just before it hits the carb, so why not direct cool air to your intake too?
