yeah my 98 had the divider but the last two i cut up were 99's... they didnt have the divider.

oh man this place is just so cute... just a bunch of pansies, sitting back holding their weiners and critizing others that are willing to step up to the plate and show people how to really modify their trucks... for cheap... bunch of comedians.

btw, if you already have the die grinder/dremel, this mod will only cost you about $30 for the intake manifold gasket set. How many other mods on the 3.9 that you know cost $30 and can add about 15 hp?

thanx for the help with this thread larry!

That's was awesome guys!

I really appreciate all the help. I think I am going to set up some time to try and do it in the next couple of weeks. I will probably give myself the full day, since I really don't want to be rushed, and things usually don't go "according to plan" for me. lol.

Who was is that sells the metal belly pan gasket? I figure I might as well replace it and be done with it if I am going to have it all apart anyway.

I would like to adjust the fuel sync while I have the intake off (I have a Ram, and it is almost impossible to see the distibutor, never mind do anything with it! Probably new cap and rotor too, and if I feel rich, new wires as well.

Thanks again for all the help guys. In the 5 months I have been visiting this page, I have learnt TONS of stuff!

Modding the intake on these v6'sers is good thing
to do nice gains that are always there

Port match will keep the off idle low end burst
helps low end power a lot like 10 hp at 1800 rpm

port match with the divider removed and the
runners shortened this burst will move from around
1600 to 2000 2500 rpm and gain around 15hp the
low end will remain about the same with some small
gains, If you shortin the runners more than 2"
than you will begain to lose low end, The way
intense is modding the intakes there should be no
low end loss at all

It all depends on how you use your truck

A guy with a heavy foot that likes to get on it
all the time will benifit from the internal work
being done to the intake, he never drops into
lockup at 45 50 mph

Now the normal Dak owner or a 4X4 would want just
the port match for the low end help when she drops
into lock up there is a noticeable improvement in
power right in that rpm range

The heads flow well all they need is a good clean
up and polish, if you go to far with the heads
low end will begain to drop off just a good port
clean will gain around 10 hp be carful what you
do here or you will be very disapointed and buying
another set of heads

Porting is for high rpm flow capibilitys

Yeah Larry,

Thanks for that. I hav a Ram with a 3.21 rear end and the NVX3500 trans. The gearing is very low. When I shift to 5th, the RPM's drop of the edge of the earth.lol! For instance doing about 88 mph on the highway I am only pulling 2100 RPM. So it is the low end that I am really after. I want that extra kick so I don't have to downshift as often whenever I hit a hill, or even a strong headwind will slow me down considerably (freaking huge frontal surface area of these Rams). I don't think I am going to shorten the runners at all, for that reason, but a porting and polishing sounds good. I can't wait to get in there now. I ported my TB about 4 months back and love it! Made a huge difference across the whole powerband, but I really want the low end beefed up. My RPM's rarely get above 3000, mostly because of the gearing.

Are there any other good mods to help out the low end?

one of the biggest mods you could do to help low end power is putting in some taller gears, like you said yours are too low already

The only thing i would do to the V6 heads is grind down the little bump on the number 2 and 5 cylinder intake ports (maybe it was 1 and 6.. been awhile since i had a set of V6 heads). There is a nasty little casting on them that has been shown to cut 10 cfm of flow over the other ports.

If anybody goes out there and wants to polish their heads (uhhhhh... lol), stay away from polishing the intake ports and only do the exhaust ports and chambers. This will allow better air/fuel mixture.

j-man,

good luck and have some fun!

polishing chambers has only show a 1% increas in flow on the flow bench. You are also actually enlarging the combustion chambers while doing it, which hurts your compression ratio... not good for a n/a motor

you polish the chambers not to increase flow, but to decrease the chance of carbon build up.. which could lead to early detonation.

Polishing wont increase the chamber enough to effect the ratio.

Larry/Intense -

Mine (2002, nearly stock) is aggravating in that it'll suddenly downshift when cruising up the interstate and going up the least little hill. The cruise is usually set right at 2K rpm, which is 70mph in my truck. Could this relatively inexpensive mod get me more torque in that range and possibly stop that aggravating downshift? It'll scare the crap out of you if you're not expecting it. I've got to where I take the cruise off in particular sections of highway where it's hilly, just for that reason. ???

describe your truck.. (i.e. quad, regular, cc)

i bet you could just adjust your throttle valve cable to prevent it from downshifting early.

Dan - doing a big block is out of the question - no dinero for that kinda stuff, and if I wanted a light truck, I'd a bought a Mitsubishi (damned good for a light truck - drove one 17 years).

A better mod to do before the intake manifold would be the V8 throttle body. That should fix your problem, but i would also check your TV cable if you are seriously just touching the throttle at high gear and it downshifts on slight hills. Also i would recommend you replace your stock muffler. The intake manifold mod is a good mod to do down the road... more noticeable improvements if you get the air in it faster and out of the motor faster.

Dan,
could i just teach him how to photoshop one in there?

Tips on photoshopping a manifold to cut down on race times at the track

1. save as .gif NOT .jpg it will keep your manifold size down

2. delete unnecessary layers in your mainfold to save weight
