Could someone list proven mods for mpg improvements. Things are getting tough with the gas prices.

Well the question is how much u want to pay to have higher mpg
Things that worked for me...
In my 3.9 i put 1.7 RR and recieved a solid 1 mpg gain ($360 from sam)
i took the fan out for only a 1/2 mpg gain (free)
some may need an electric fan to keep it cool during hot days

Set Fuel sync correctly +3 degrees seems to work
good, it didnt really show much of a gain it just put me on the higher end of the average and stopped the huge fluctuation in mileage (free)

Synthetic motor oil worth a gain of 1/2 mpg
using mobil 1 (stay away from hydrocracked synthetics) in the near future ill put synthetic in everything not just the motor

Things that had no noticable effect on mileage...

Gibson cat back singel exit exhaust no gain or loss but a nice sound

Cold air intake no gain or loss just more power

Throttle body grinding no gain or loss just more power and better response

Timing advanced by moving crank position sensor
A loss since mine couldnt handle being pushed ahead a couple degrees more

Some vehicles may respond differently
this is just what i seen with my dakota quad 3.9
it used to get 12.3 right now it gets 14.2

Get more air in. Cold air alone won't boost mpg, but either go to a cone filter or enlarge the inlet to the stock airbox (the box is the biggest restriction, not the paper filter). I prefer the latter option cause it's free.
Get a V8 throttle body (mine cost me $65 on Ebay, you should be able to find one for around that if you're patient and keep your eyes open).
These two things alone gave me better than +2mpg, not to mention a pretty dramatic performance boost.
And use the stock heat range plugs unless you have a detonation problem.

CC 4x2 auto 3.55 LSD 30"tires - 23.6mpg @70mph.

Add a tonneau cover!!! Remove the restriction on the air intake. Open up the exhaust. Remove the stock muffler and add a high flow MOFO.

Modify the range of motion of your right foot. It's a free, instant modification that's more effective than all the above put together.

This is what I do. I don't let the truck get over 2,000 rpm's. It's really hard to do, but I really, really, REALLY helps. It has done a world of difference to my truck. It takes it a while to get up to speed, but when you hit 3rd gear, it gives you a lot of play room with the RPM's and you can get faster.

Like I said, it's hard, but it really helps. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

do it the redneck way. take off the tailgate. there's less wind resistance from the wind catching on it. or drop some money and buy a tonneau cover or gatornet. my tailgate has a nasty dent in it so it worked just as well to take the tailgate off.

The comments about right foot and lighter acceleration are absolutely right - a bunch of mods won't help if you're always stomping on it.
And the tailgate thing isn't much of a factor unless you have an eight foot bed, which most of us don't (this has been discussed here ad nauseum).

heh yeah i have to agree keep ur foot out of it lol
the primary reason people seem to get better mileage with mods is cause they dont need to be in it as hard to get up to speed as they did before they had the mods
