Subject: Towing small camper
IP: Logged

Message:
Guys,
I just bought a small pop-up camper, unloaded it weighs about 1300lbs. I feel quite comfortable with the standard transmission cooler (did not come from factory with towing option), but do you think switching to sythetic tranny fluid would be of benefit? I towed it for the first time last night and I could barely tell that it was back there except when braking and initial acceleration. I towed with the overdrive off, but do you guys think it would be okay to tow a trailer that small on flat rodes with the overdrive engaged? Any add on you guys suggest to help improve towing?
Thanks

I have a 93 4x4 3.9 with an automatic tranny, and I tow my 1000 lbs Seadoo all the time with it. I let mine run in overdrive, but a headwind or slight incline will cause it to shift out of overdrive. I don't think that you need a better transmission cooler with only 1300 lbs.

I tow a 4500lb 21ft boat with mine for the last 3 years. Never had a problem and I pull it 300 miles each way. However, I change my transmission oil every 25000, and the rear gear fluid as well. By the way it's a 2001 2wd CC. I always tow it with the overdrive off. Even when I load the bed with crap I turn the overdrive off. Just saves on the where and tear...

Synthetics will loer the temp from 30 to 50 degree
and make it last longer,

Also a Transgo shift kit doing the street not
strip setup will give you a little firmer shift
and less heat buildup.

In my 95 4X4 I have a trans temp guage and the
Amsoil universal synthetic lowerd me from 200
to about 170 degrees operating temp

The stock trans will handle it without doing anything, doing these things will just make it
last longer under heavy service
