Message:
98 Dak V6, engine stock. ~90,000 miles on it. Cat was replaced at 29K miles by dealer. I just failed a smog test. The only thing I failed was NO at 15 mph - 930 vs 517 Max allowed, at 30 mph, it was 750 vs 770 max allowed. My HC was up there too 46 vs 52 max, 31 vs 36 max at 15 & 25 mph respectively.

No check engine light at all. So am I looking at a bad cat or vacuum leak?

Check first for vacuum leaks
and also check gas cap ( needs to seal tightly )
Also if you fill up with higher grade fuel
just might pass...

It's possible that a good tuneup might be in order. Even though you only failed NOX, the others emissions are pretty close to the limit. It looks to me like you need two things a good tune up: sparkplugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor and o2 sensor. Do these and you should pass. Failing emissions when the engine is under load is an indication that a good tune is needed. I have seen cars in Washington State that have had 200,000 thousand miles on them that have been well maintained and tuned up pass emission test with flying colors.

I changed the plug wires, regapped the plugs - they all looked good - no deposits, gaps good for the most part (platinum plugs) - new distributer, rotor, cleaned the K&N filter and found a vacuum leak - a vacuum port on the side of the TB whose cap was falling apart - No check engine light so I doubt it's the O2 sensor. Had it rechecked for 15mph test, still failed misarably, and the Cat has about 70K on it. So I'm getting a new one tomorrow (plus a flowmaster 70 series muffler). Oh, gas cap was checked and is okay.

We failed the emissions check on ours too.It wasnt by much. They said that someone replaced the cat with a generic one,so we have to put the right one back on and they said that, that might take care of our engine burning too hot.Is this true.

I replaced my factory cat (which went bad) with a Car Sound cat
(don't know which model.) Mine passes well under the CA
levels. As far as your O2 you should put a scanner or voltmeter
on it and check if it's doing the electrical flip flop thing from
.001 to .9 when the vehicle is warmed up. i don't like guessing
at parts. As far as the check engine light being an indicator, it
certainly never came on while my cat wasn't working very well.
so, there must be a bit of slop in the tolerances the system
allows as passable.

If it runs hot the cheap cat is to small and does
not flow well this would make your mixture rich
and fail a test

Carsound or catco highflow

I would deff also get that o2 scanned

Thanks for your information about my failed smog test. The thing I dont understand is that when we bought our truck from a dealer and it had the cadiallic converter on it then and they said that it passed just fine.We were also told that the other reason it didnt pass was because its not the factory cat,its a generic one and it has to have a certain type on there. We were told that the dealer is respondible for replacing the converter because it wasnt the legal converter when he sold it to us,but he refuses to replace it.

Allen, this is exactly what you do. If you are married have your
wife do this, they are very good at it. Get on the phone, call that
dealership and speak to the general manager. Mention the
words "legal action" and "better business bureau" they will
change their tune or they will have some serious problems.
What they did, if true, is illegal. I've done this to my Dodge
dealership and the gm called me apologizing and fixed the
problem I had right away. The delership is required to sell you a
vehicle that passes smog, etc before unloading it on someone.
Any seller is for that matter.

I bought my 2002 Dodge Dakota from the Dodge dealer back in 2002. Just recently it failed the first smog test. The testing station told me it passed all tests except my truck's computer is not communicating with the testing machine. My "check engine" light is also on. What can be causing this?

water in the oil thats a low blow

When I was in high school I had a 1966 396 SS
chevelle everyone was julious of the cars I had
but they never thougt about how many dishes I
washed from the time I was 14 untill I got my
licence to own a car like that

so some fine guys dumped a gallion of water in
my motor I lived about 6 miles from the school
and on the way home my oil pressure was jumping
I checked it and it was way over full, I drained
it changed filter warmed it up and changed both
again lucaly my engine was ok

When I was a senior I bought a 1970 GTX 440 but
after I got my licence I worked for a contractor
and way back than he paid me $6 an hour more than
a lot of regular workers were making and back than
a new car like that was just over $3000 I made
more than that the 2 summers I worked for him

They were all very julious after I got that car
if they were not so lazy and would get a summer
job they could have had nice cars also and it
was very hard work for a young kid

Just shows you the differance there is in people
some are honest and hard working and some are
nothing but pure lazy and dishonest

A good high flow cat and good o2 sensors will
pass the smog test with ease we install the
car sound made by magniflow

Like someone said just mention laywer and lawsuite
and there tune will change imiditly

Like my 93 dak with the bad computer only 4000
miles on the truck, sometimes it would not start
I hade it in 6 times before they finaly replaced
the starter, than about 6 more times for running
problems it would not move when it was cold I
was getting so pissed I would hold it to the floor
and dump the clutch to get it to go after I
contacted my laywer and mentioned lemon law within
2 hours chrysler bought the truck back and offered
to rent me a car untill I found a new vehicle, I
said screw that I want another truck so I just
went out on the lot and picked out a 94 and just
paid the diff

They would have lost a dealer star on there sign
If I would have taken them to court so they
moved very fast.

The laywer told me to stop making payments but I
told him I paid the $11,000 price in cash no
loan

I drove home that day with a new truck and it
never had a problem ever ran great I should have
kept it but I sold it to a friend after I got my
95 4x4 the next year and he is still driving
that truck to this day
