Anyone having a problem with front rotors?

I just changed the front pads and rotors on my new truck. I used Bendix Pads and the rotors are Aimes. I have less than 700 miles on the brakes and when I hit the brakes the front end shakes.

Mind you this only happens after you have driven the truck for awhile. In the morning when I go to work, it is fine, but about 15-20 stops the shaking starts to happen.

So I am assuming that the rotors are getting hot and are warping. But if I return them, to get replacements (1 year warr) will I have the same prob? Can a caliper be sticking?? Anyone have the same problem?

Mark

I had the same problems the 1st time I changed my front brakes. The problem was, I waited too long to change them and they were warped slightly. So I changed the rotors and it stopped the shimmy. As a matter of fact, I'm starting to notice a shake again. Time to change the brakes and rotors......??

Update to my problem...thought I would pass along to anyone else who has had the same....

Change the rear shoes. And turn the drums.

I spoke to our truck mechanic at work and told him what I was experiancing.

After removing the rear tires and looking at the reaar shoes, realized that they were still the original factory shoes. Turned the rotors and installed new Bendix rear shoes and hardware kit...my shaking days are over.

I had the same problem exactly as you discribed, and i just changed them last weekend, but i have already turned my rotors and i think that i have to buy some more now, beacuse turning them again just aint wise, they could shatter and crate a big problem.

Hey Dakota Mark, were your rear brakes wore out or just not working properly. My 1994 truck only has 63000 miles. Brake pad wear has not been a problem but this will be the 3rd set of front rotors.I spent almost $1000 dollars at a local dealer last time, here it is 6000 miles later and they are warping again. This is my first Dodge, this brake thing is driving me nuts.

David,
Forget the dealership they will just keep feeding you crap until they get all your money, I had the same problem with my truck shaking when I braked. I went to Http://www.Truckperformance.com and bought the Stainless Steel Brake Co. front brake upgrade kit, 400 some odd dollars (ouch) but after 45,000 mi. of shaking like a crack addict I was more than overjoyed with the results, it only takes like 30mins to an hour to do and I did it with regular hand tools.

Good luck,
George

Hey guys,
I just changed my front pads and rotors again on my 98 dak (I thnk this was the 4th or 5th time for the pads, and the 2nd time for the rotors). I'v noticed that on the passenger side, it seems like the inside pad is the only one wearing down. Maybe a sticky caliper. Who know? But changing pads and rotors is super easy on this truck, just getting expensive. I'm gonna check out this caliper problem in the near future and I will keep all updated on what I find.
Later,
Mark S.

pyrodak, i had the exact same problem as you except mine was on the driver's side. I told dodge about it, and they blew me off. I ended up tearing everything apart and lubing the assembly up real good. So far so good. Also, the front brakes on the dak do suck really bad. I have the lifetime pads from autozone on there, and they will only last about 20-25k miles. The rotors go pretty quick, too.

I am starting to get alittle worried. I have a 2000 QC with a V6 man and about 25000 miles. (I know, I should of got the V8) I love the truck and I have had no problems with it. I am even considering trading it in to get a newer one (with a V8). This isn't the only message board where I've seen people having problems with brakes and rotors. I know every car/truck has its inherent lil' quarks but this appears to be something that the manufacure could easily fix. Its a great big lil' truck and I hope my luck with the breaks continues to hold out.

Didn't plan on going to a dealer again. If I didn't hear anything that sounded good I was just going to sell it. I'll try one more time.

I have a 2000 dakota and need to replace the front rotors. Does anyone know the procedure for replacing the rotors. Haynes or Chilton don't have manuals for a 2000 dakota and I'd like to know if there's anything I need to know, like torque spec's.

Thanks,
Jerry

I just got slotted and cross drilled rotors with kevlar pads. They cost was just over $200. The rotors are from SP Performance and the pads came from Hawk. I bought these these through the South East Dakota R/T group. These things look awsome and stop me almost on a dime. I have a 2000 QC so I have a little extra weight to stop.

If anyone has self-ajusting rear brakes try driving in reverse for about 20-25 feet, stop, then drive. They should work fine after that. I have 02 sxt and that seems to work for it.

Whenever you pull off your old pads check for even wear. If one pad is worn more than other than your caliper is likely sticking. Go to O'Reilly or Autozone and they have counter protectors with info like what your pads look like and the culprit. Most complaints here sounds like bad caliper(s).

Your brakes should be set 60/40. 60% stopping power on front & 40% on back. 2 sets of front pads/rotors and your rear should be close to going out. If you went through 3 sets of front and your rear is still new-looking it needs to be adjusted to pick up more of the load.

Dakota's have weak brakes, ball joints, and transmissions. That is why we are all "Up Side Down" when we go to unload these defective dog turds. I am currently at 180k and know to allow room for my stopping distance. If I can't trade it in, I will drive it till the wheels come off.

Does anyone know what size that nut is on the spindle that holds the rotor on, or is the rotor removable without taking that nut off? And yes those stock rotors are crap...
