Subject: 93 Dakota dies and has trouble starting
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1993 Dakota with a 3.9L. Sometimes when i go to start it it will sit there and crank and crank but not start, and sometimes it will start just fine. After it starts it will be running fine, but then it will die while i am driving. It also seems to be idleing rough. I replaced the distributor car/rotor and the coil, and checked/cleaned the spark plug wires (spark plugs are reletively new). I also replaced the fuel filter. I have been told it could be the ignition module, but I don't know how to replace that. Anyone got any ideas????

I am positive that it is ne of two things.

Your fuel pum in the tank or a splice under the hood behind that black power center box.

I had the same problem, I have a '93 v6 and it would start....sometimes. And sometimes it would just die when going. Mine ended up being the fuel pump.

This is how I found out that it was the pump. When I went to start it, I would turn the key to on, but not start. When doing this i was hanging my head out to hear for the pump to come on for its two seconds. I found out that the times the pupm didnt come on were the times the truck wouldnt start.

Good luck

My 92 did the same thing. when it dies out does it have a spark? check that first if no spark when it dies then also check to see if the check engine light is lit like normal when you are starting it. if it doesnt come on have the computer checked. i had a short in mine and everything was fiena nd dandy and checked out good when it was running but everytime i went to have it checked there was no problem. only when it finally died were we able to find out the short was in the cicuit board. i did ll the same things you did replacing the coil etc and it turned out ot be the computer. It cost me $200.00 at the local napa parts store. hope this helps

Check connections to fuse box under hood
drivers side and wiring in harness from it
back to firewall
Find a join/splice of 3 or 4 wires
REDO it - solder and tape or Good quality
joiner " wire loom "..
