Subject: Dynomax 17748 - THANKS!!! IP: Logged
Message: First I just want to say a big THANK YOU. I've been reading
this forum since before I bought my Dak. There has been
TONS of great links and information that I've gleaned
from you folks! Truly hats off to posters like Larry from
J&J Auto and DakotaDan and many many others who have
contributed to the forums success.
After spending about a week reading over archived posts
and searching for answers I finally decided to go ahead
and get the Dynomax 17748 installed on my truck. WOW
you guys were spot on when you described it's
performance and sound. I'm not as young as I use to be,
so I didn't want some rice, buzzy, bee farting in a can
sound. I'm still waiting for the burn-in but this system
ROCKS! Even my exhaust guy was impressed. I had him
cut out the stock muffler and weld this one into place. No
other modifications were made. It's the stock pipe
running in the stock location. I didn't even put any chrome
tip on it or anything. The total cost for it was $120.00
installed. The installer was a local guy who I've used
before for my old jeep. He is also listed on the Dynomax
website. If you live in South Florida and want exhaust
work I would highly recommend Steve's Custom Exhaust
Shop on Prospect Rd. www.exhaustserv.com
The sound is smooth and mellow, sometimes I don't even
notice it at all. Above about 2000RPM it has a slight
drone but it's nothing that I couldn't live with. At WOT you
can tell the engine is breathing better and sounds good.
Does it sound like a V8... no it won't it's not a V8. But I
expect that. The install is on a 2001 Black SLT QC V6 all
stock... except for the exhaust now... =)
I also did some research on air intakes. This is the next
modification I want to do but I'm still a bit confused. One
thing that puts a slight hamper on this is my wife and I
are in the process of adopting a child and as you can
imagine it's quite expensive. I am allotted very little $$$$
to play with. 90% of it goes to my passion.... FISHING! Gas,
oil, rigging, tackle, bla bla bla... So with a limited budget
what is the best way to go. A K&N FIPK (sp?) kit is out of
the question. Drop an after market air cleaner makes the
best sense for me. I've seen several homemade ideas and
I have to admit you guys are a cleaver bunch. =) But I've
been through the home customizing with my old truck. (I
use to have an S-10 street truck... killed it after 80K
doing all kinds of tricks and stupid stuff) Whatever I do
must last and cause no extra maintenance issues. Plus I
don't want to be wrenching on it every other weekend. I
want to have my free time to spend with our new son
when we finally get him. So with that in mind, limited
budget, not a rinky dinky system and longevity a must
what would you guys suggest?
Thanks again!
Peace

Message: See if you can find a piece of straight (non-ribbed) tubing that will fit where your ribbed tubing is on your intake and replace it. That will increase airflow some. You could also just get a K&N drop in air filter (fits in your stock airbox - p/n is 33-2175 and costs around $45 from Advance Auto Parts). Another thing you can do is remove the rubber flap that is in front of the airbox beside your radiator...it'll allow more cooler air to enter your engine. That takes all of about 15 seconds unless you wanna spend time taking the plastic rivets out. I just left all mine in. Let me clarify above though...you can do ALL of these at the same time, it not so much a choice of which to do.
Oh yeah, I've also heard of some people cutting a larger diameter hole in the intake side of the airbox. I'm not sure how well that helps though.

Message: I just got my 17748 installed on my 3.7L today. It sounds so much better at idle. You can actually hear the exhaust now. It's not too loud though, which I like. I realize it still needs to burn-in, but I very happy with it so far. No droning at cruising speeds either.
Thanks for all the help forum members.
