Subject: Shift Points ? IP: Logged
Message: I'm outta ideas. I bought my first Dodge a few months ago and I'm having a hard time adjusting to this to this automatic trans.
It is a 1999, 4WD, V6 with the automatic. The shift points are set up for a beginner driver, I guess. Under soft or normal acceleration it is in OD when I hit 42mph.
I have made a few mods like 180 stat., moved air sensor, drop in air filter, installed all syn fluids, ect...
OK, the real problem is this: if I accelerate hard, like 3/4 to the floor, it upshifts right when it starts pulling good which is at about 3200 RPM.
But if I floor it, then it will run upto the redline. I adjusted the TV cable out about 1/16 to 1/8". I drove it for 3 weeks with it shifting hard, it actually jerks your head during normal driving. I put the cable back to the original position. I did not want to drop something on the highway. Everytime some one was riding with me they would ask me what was wrong with the transmission.
So, How do you get the transmaission to shft in the 3200 rpm to redline range with out flooring it and driving it like a race car?
I called 2 transmission shops and asked to talk to someone that was familiar with Dodge transmissions. Naturally I got 2 different opinions.
The first guy said it should shift around 4000 rpm under average to hard acceleration.
The second guy said the shift points were normal and that Dodge did that because they had weak transmissions from 95 to 2001. I'm not trying start to start any flaming contest, just repeating what he said. :)
Can someone with an automatic, V6 and 3.92 gears tell me what RPM their Dakota shifts at?
Also, if it sounds like my Dakota needs adjusted, how do you do it other than the TV cable?
I have done many searches here and did not find what I was looking for yet.

Message: That's why I bought the 5 speed manual. (not trying to flame you, I just haven't had any problems with the 5 speed as of yet)

Message: My tranny does exactly the same thing on my 01 V6 QC. I'm learning about this now. I've been talking with Wayne at APS. He is a Dogde tranny expert. Soon I will be installing one of his custom valve bodies and some other goodies. I'll post with my experiences after it is done.

Message: the 99 is a re electric gov presure
The jerky shift is what is called a slide bump
from shifting to slow at higher rpm
The only way to stop this is to increase the
presure and shift a little faster
TransGo shift kit
Install resistor supplyed with kit and turn the
presure screw up 2 1/2 turns now readjust your
shift points it will shift at a higher rpm and
not have the slide bump, firm but not harsh shifts
O/D and lockup are controled by comp the only way
to increase the rpm on these is to raise TPS
voltage on the 99 upto .9 .95 this will raise the
shift point higher with less throttle
