Subject: 91 charging problems again, different ?
IP: Logged

Message:
So ive had this problem for about 6 months now where the battery isnt getting any amps from the alt. i have replaced the alt. the batt. the ecu re ran new wires for the ground a new wire to go from the alt to the battery and nothing works. well yesterday my a/c and vents just stop working, so i tear the dash apart replace the blower motor and nothing. so i grad a test light and i am probeing wire to see if they are ground or power. in doing all this i notice my check engine light that had been on for 6 months went out. now i had run a switch to ground out the alt to make it charge. (it worked but i know it wasnt the smartest choice) well after i saw the light was out and that the truck was charging on its own power i got to wondering what would happen if i flip that switch on again, so i did and immediatly it threw the light again and i cant remember now what wire i might have touched to get it to clear the first time.
so my main question is is there any wires behind the dash that would deal with the charging system?
with the vents not working i figured that the switches that control everything isnt getting 12v, the fuses arent blown and i have swapped the a/c relay a few times. from the switch it goes down to a small box with 1 harness with approx 8 wires, i found 2 of them operate the wiper blades. from that box the wires go over to the steering colum right at the firewall from there i have no idea where they go and it was dark out by then so i couldnt see anything.
Any help from either problem would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the harness under hood from
fuse box to firewall ?
There is a " splice " in it of 3 or 4 wires
Chryco used a poor ' joiner ' on this splice
= best to redo it ( solder and tape )
or at least a good quality ' joiner ' connector..

theres a black or blk/wht to ground
one that goes to the battery + has a fusable link
another goes to the ignition switch then to the battery +,
and one to the pcm
thats the wiring on the alt

the fan motor switch may be bad or you can check the fan motor resistor under the hood pass side, firewall, has two small screws holding it on
and a 5 wire plug-in,
one wire goes to the fan motor, the others to the switch, for the 4 speeds
one should have current from one of these 4 wires at all times if the key is on and the fan switch is on

check plug-in at the resistor for current daks have a problem have, corrosion and the resistor

i,m sorry but i don,t remember the wire colors
if this don,t help get a chiltons or hayes book
for the colors and wiring

good luck

Well no luck I replaced the ignitionn switch and still no luck. But when i take the harness off the ign. switch and then plug it in the truck will charge on its own for about 1 or 2 seconds then it stops chargeing and throws the check engine light again. Im pulling my hair out over this anyone have a service manuel that they could send me any info on the charging system and any wires that might run inside the cab of the truck? Thanks for any help.

have you checked out the voltage regulator in the computer?

the wiring is probaly all right if you hook up the wiring at the switch and it charges for a few seconds then stops
