Subject: Tapping on drivers side of engine, help!
IP: Logged

Message:
Ive noticed a tapping noise coming from the drivers side of my engine. I tightened the manifold bolts, which were lose, but it didnt stop the noise at all. It sounds kinda like an exhaust leak, but its pretty loud. It is in step with the RPM of the truck. It just recently started doing this. I changed my oil last Thursday, and I listened to the engine after I was done, and it wasnt there. Ive done everything I can think of, and checked everything that could make a noise that Im aware of. Any other ideas?

No, its way too loud to be pinging, and its not that kind of noise. It sounds like its coming from the valve cover area, but I cant feel any tapping or things like that when I inspect the covers, and I didnt hear anything with the old indian trick, the long screwdriver hearing aid. I checked it after I got home from work, and it wasnt doing it. Maybe its a lifter that wasnt oiled well. Any ideas though?

Was that the exhaust manifold bolts you tightend?
If not try backing them off and getting a new set for both sides. I have had to drill out one on each side of the block. I never touched them untill I was driving down the road one day and next thing my truck started making this really loud tapping noise on take and under light loads. Drivers side broke first, so I replaced them. Ofcourse I waited to do the pass. side because of the trouble I had getting the broken stud out, next summer I paid for it (it took longer to change)

Sorry I got carried away.

I've noticed in my 98 v6 the lifters are cheapo's - they will tick like a mother after it sits a while. This is prob what you're hearing - good luck!

Yes , a lifter without oil , or failing..
Also note - use a BETTER oil Filter
to eliminate or at least greatly reduce
that noise on startup after sitting for a day
or two..
Wix , Napa , AMSOIL

NOT fram or purolator................

In 1998, Dodge reloated the EVAP silenoid from the intake manifold to the firewall on the drivers side. When the EVAP silenoid goes bad, It make a loud tapping sound on the drivers side and it sounds just like a bad lifter. I replaced lifters and push rods and still had the same knock. I finally got tired of it and was ready to rebuild the motor when a Mechanic looked at it and pointed out the problem. The EVAP is vacume driven and eccelerates as you step on the gas. Being that it is mounted on the firewall, it echos into the cab and sounds quite loud. I relocated mine back to the intake manifold.
NO More knock. A good test is when you here the knocking, unplug the power to the EVAP silenoid and see if the knocking stops. Mine stopped.

Ok, I checked the EVAP system, and it didnt stop the clicking, but threw a nice engine code :P Ive noticed now that it only seems to make the noise when its cold, but stops completely after it warms up. Again, I was thinking the exhaust manifolds were lose, but they are as tight as they can be on both sides. It sometimes struggles to idle after starting, so perhaps it could be a fouled injector? I dont see how it would stop after its warm if its an injector though. I sounds like its coming from around the intake manifold, not further down on the engine. I pulled the plugs on the drivers side, and they all seem fine. Any more ideas? Thanks a lot for all the help!

It's definitely valve train noise if it goes away after start up. You have very little oil at the top of the engine when it's cold. Fram oil filter or other cheapo oil filter caused perhaps. When the engine is warm oil has had a chance to circulate and thin under the temperature and coat and get everywhere.

It did seem to start after I changed my oil last week. Last oil change I used 5w30 Havoline synthetic with an STP S16 oil filter. This oil change, I used 10w40 Havoline synthetic with the same STP filter. I used a heavier weight oil since its coming up summer. I didnt have this noise before the oil change. Could the change in weight of the oil be the culprit?

The more I listen, the more it sounds like its coming from the injectors. Is there anything that can happen to an injector to make it sound like that, then stop after warm up? Or could it be the oil described in the previous post?
Thanks a lot, again!

What shape are your exhaust manifold gaskets in? You can tighten your exhaust manifold all you want but if there is a piece of gasket missing it wont help. It sounds to me like you have a gasket problem, if they have a small tear or crack it will make a loud ticking noise when cold but when the manifolds heat up the metal expands and seals the leak. Hope this helps

Ill get a set of exhaust manifold gaskets and replace that side, it seems like a good idea. It still sounds as though the noise is coming from around the intake manifold. Maybe it just sounds that way, and its the manifold. The day before I changed my oil, I took a trip up a mountain. Perhaps it heated the gaskets up enough and split the metal.

If your exhaust manifold bolts were loose before you went up a mountian the manifold could have been jarred or moved around while you were offroad and that could damage the gaskets for sure. Good luck with installing the new ones, I suggest a case of your favorite beer close by might help with the installation.

Do you think they will be that bad to get off and reinstall? Of course, my truck is a 97, and I think rust was an option the original owner added. Maybe it wont be that bad...

As long as your bolts are not rusted in it should not be to hard. You will need a good puddy nife to scrap off the old gasket, some sandpaper is helpful as well. I have done this before and it was not that bad, it just took alot of time. The most important thing is to get all the old gasket off and have a nice clean surface for the new one. This is what took most of the time when I did mine.

there aint no exhaust manifold gaskets on the gen 3 dodge magnums, don't need them unless the manifold has been removed only to be replaced, then and only then do you need them.
