the rattling noise u are hearing is probly due to the timiing chain, the 87 and 88 dakotas had a problem with the timing chain slapping against the timing cover after significant wear, to correct the problem dodge incoporated a timing chain tensioner which kept the timing more accurate and less likely to rattle.
you can buy them through your local dodge dealer, part # is p5007709 it is considered a performance part from dodge. i would also reccomend a double roller timing chain replacement while you have the timing chain off.
and one more mod i would reccomend is to drill a small hole in the bolt to the upper left, the bolt that holds the camshaft thrust plate to the block, this will allow the oil to drain onto the timing chain immediatly instead of having to build up volume to get to the ports that dodge forged into the block.
this will increase the longevity of the timing chain and timing gears, and reduce fatigue from cold or hot starts!
any question about anything on a dakota engine should be sent to motorkaw@eartlink.net
thanks and have a great day

Use a stick of wood ( like a broomhandle piece )
as a " stethoscope " to probe and narrow down where the noise comes from ...

A lot of daks do have the problem with the timing chain...it's a known problem. It doesn't mean the chain needs replaced or anything. It's just noisy. The way to get rid of the noise is to replace the timing chain with a double-roller chain and also install a tensioner.

Question, has anyone known of this timing chain actually breaking? Mine rattles some, engine has 128,000 miles, but if its not a problem I can live with a little rattle. It was enough time to get the water pump off and the new one on, I don't want to spend that much time to get rid of a little rattle now and then. If it runs good, why mess with it?

They will eventually break or jump teeth on the sprocket...usually around 100,000 miles is when they're due for a replacement. Some people drive em til they break, but if it were me, I'd have it changed as preventative maintenance. When they do break, they sometimes will do a considerable bit of damage to the engine. Not worth it in my opinion...

You'll know when you break it when you go to start the truck and the distributor spins but the engine doesn't turn. I hope mine goes in its sleep.

The timing chain is a very common problem, especially on the 3.9L. Another common problem that also sounds like rattling is spark knock, and valve lifters. I heard a nasty rattling in my dak, and put new lifters and spark plugs in and it sounds like new.
