Subject: Buying an 87 Dakota. Any advice?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking into purchasing an '87 Dakota auto that has spent it's life on construction sites. It reportedly has less than 100k and has been used only for moving construction materials and rubbish. The person handling the sale reports that it does not have rust or mechanical problems, but does have some dings.

It's primary purpose for me would be daily driving.

What kind of common problems do they have that I should be aware of and watch out for when I go to inspect the vehicle? I am also wondering what it's towing capabilities would be (possibly a small boat?).

I apparently forgot to say that it is a v6, not a 4cyl. It also has a ladder rack attached to it. And, I happen to have a couple of ladders at the house... Sure to attract the ladies.

Is it a 5-speed or automatic? I don't know what year they switched to the overdrive automatic, but I would be a little leary of it (read some of the posts on this web page). If it is an AOD, look at the fluid on the stick, check for burnt color, bad smell or rough shifting. If its a 5-speed or three speed automatic, they seem to be a little more durable, three speed may drink a little more gas on the highway. My '91 has the pre-Mag 3.9 and its OK, I wouldn't race anyone, but I bought if for a daily driver/second vehicle and the price was right, had it little over a year now and it runs nice, it is a 5-speed by the way. Drive it anywhere from 10 miles/day to 300+ per day on business. Good luck!!

It is an automatic. I don't need it to race anyone, I have the 351 Mustang for that. I just want something that is good to drive to and from work and perhaps pull a small boat.

Are there common Dakota problems with leaks, rust, etc that I should look out for?

for 980 i would buy that u could prob even take the price down. if it runs mint who cares. im sure its got the usual dodge probs, junk electrical. for alittle while a whole bunch of premag probs poped up in like a 2 week span, most were fuel pump and electrial probs.

you,ll be all set with the v6,it,s a 3 spd auto and they are good, just put a trans cooler on if it don,t have one.

the truck will pull a small boat OK.

the biggest draw back is the carb and computer system.

you should get in the 18 plus mpg range.

thats a fair price and if you can get it cheap
all the better.

the 87's are the best you can get with only minnor carb problems and no others you are good to go. these trucks will pull a small boat with ease. they out pull ford ranger and chevy s10 of the same year

Well, I went to inspect the truck. The truck had major rust on the bed. The rear bumper was also rusted through. I heard valvetrain noise from the engine. The seats were torn and the interior was dry rotted. He said he wouldnt go any lower than 850, so I told him I'd let him know and went and bought a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4 XLT Premium w/ leather interior.
